Being a border country means being a country in close contact with history. And being a country in close contact with history means begin a country of “stories,” of lives in transit. Finland seems to confirm this very transitiveness. Caught between Western and Eastern Europe, at least until the fall of the Berlin Wall (and nevertheless throughout almost the entire tumultuous and tragic past century), the Finns found themselves living in close contact with the historical events of the 20th century, heading down an impervious road along the edge of a precipice. That is to say, between Hitler and Stalin, or between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, if we were to simplify the idea and if we were to believe in a story made up of lead actors and, later, by extras or, nevertheless, by a supporting cast. However, history anticipates and contains within it “stories” and thus complex knots that cannot be untangled by the comb of Manichean ideology. That which separates the right from the left or that, with equal homologizing force, amends opposites in such a way so that they form a single entity, with the sole intention of freeing them from the problems caused by the irreducible complexity and plurality of human life. This is not how things stand. There are no combs that allow us to distance ourselves from the burden of discernment and to hence rest assured that the four cardinal points are enough to orient us in the chaos of life. From this standpoint, the broad retrospective dedicated to the Kinotar production company is validated precisely by the search for those cinematic works that favor “stories” and not history, the complex vicissitude of human existence rather than the story imprisoned by ideology. A petition in favor of filmmakers that doubt those who, through the medium of moving images, place human events within static paintings and, paradoxically, within immobile representations. The films of Finnish directors – or, to be more specific in regards to the selection here at Pesaro, of female Finnish directors – follow these lives in transit. They are films that relate stories in the plural, that move along bumpy border roads and that anxiously seek to gather the testimonies of individuals who ask themselves, or force the spectators to ask themselves, what it means to be a part of this world. The seven documentaries and two fiction films, the latter which are directed by men (Taanila is a separate issue), share a common denominator. All of the characters and witnesses captured by the movie cameras and agile digital cameras feels themselves to be on the edge between being and not being a part of this world, between feeling that they live in this world and perceiving that this same world, however, does not live inside of them. Some may think that selecting documentaries directed only by women is a whim on the part of the programmers, and they may object that the Kinotar catalogue features many male directors, as the Kinotar producers themselves attest. Nevertheless, in a cinema landscape that is increasingly more oriented towards diluting conflicts or, on the other hand, to presenting pre-established themes with grave shortsightedness (let us not forget that we are in the midst of an era of preventative war), it seems opportune to turn to a female perspective or, rather, to eyes that see the lacerations of reality with sensitivity and unimpaired rationality. In regards to the documentary program, let us begin by citing Kanerva Cederström who, with Trans-Siberia (1999) and Lost 74 41 a Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema
