Raramente siamo a livello. “Ciao Zio Bill. Buona visione. Carlo Michele Schirinzi by Roberto Nanni “What floor?” The elevator begins its ascent then stops a few seconds later. My “travel companion” is a young man with thin-framed glasses. A large mirror behind him displays his hands crossed behind his back. At the beginning of our wait, his right index finger begins caressing the mirror’s surface, leaving a trace, an opaque semicircle. The cause of the interruption is not a blackout but a simple mechanical problem. Transferring our weight, the elevator starts up again with nervous jolts, pausing motionlessly for only a few seconds. It requires strange balancing acts on our part. Carlo, that’s how he introduces himself, is no longer caressing the mirror. Speaking of which, his handprints, as he searches for something to hold onto, are spread out and superimposed. We are hardly ever level. Sliced up into horizontal sections, the structure reveals itself in its entirety. It moves past us like a film projected out of frame. A little while later, my interest piqued by the striking films of a young filmmaker from Puglia’s Salento region, a certain Carlo Michele Schirinzi, I read a biography of his in a catalogue. I recognized him in that B&W photo: the acrobat with whom I’d spent fifteen very long minutes in that crazy elevator. By way of a magical introduction, I found that incident to be a metaphor for his work. Seen from the elevator’s transparent walls, the building seemed to us to be cut into strips. It was as if we were creeping jerkily along the vertical plane of a mortuary table or an obelisk. Leaning against the doors, a pile of snow in the form of white sheets, which will be replaced, a few floors later, by the legs of a man, framed at the knee. Strangely enough, we pause before them for a long time, while from the television set we can hear the sounds of a 1960s American TV show. “Hi, Uncle Bill. What is that?” “An aquarium, kids. This is a catfish.” “Look, Uncle Bill, it has little taillights.” Carlo tries to interpret reality, not to represent it. His need is not backed up by the search for a kind and correct mise-en-scene. He perseveres in narrating through unique superimpositions that elude all realistic trivialities. A rare metaphysical tension to preserve and stimulate. I believe that the merit of his work lies in the inability to define it, the healthy impossibility in describing it. Trying to push the buttons is useless: Carlo, with his sense of balance, will be the one deciding where to stop. Happy viewing. 136 41 a Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema
