On certain themes by Massimo Galimberti “Art, like religion, arises from an unfulfilled desire.” The aphorism is by nature peremptory, absolute, and refuses any opening towards the exterior. An aphorism always has something of the irrefutable, it is similar to a slogan and tries to convince by simulating the truth. It cannot be manipulated, transformed or integrated. It is precise in each of its parts, perfectly calibrated in its form. It is clear-cut, dictatorial: you either accept it or reject it, and in the moment that you accept it, it becomes a truth, part of the collective patrimony, to share and convey. Religion is the opiate of the masses: it tends to repress all instincts, to tame rebellious souls. Religion is necessary in controlling the masses; it allows one to accept the present in light of a wonderful future. Art is like religion, it is a sedative against frustrations: it annihilates the spectator, throwing him into a state of ecstasy that impedes his every action and clouds his reason. The aesthetic experience produces “a suspension, a distance from the conscious subjectivity that is committed to and involved in the needs and events of the world.” Calling attention to these effects and acting upon them is tantamount to a simultaneous declaration of conduct and of war. Cane CapoVolto have always aimed at canceling every poetic moment, and any romantic residue of emotion in the aesthetic processes. Their work seems to derive from a calculated thought process and to abide by it, in order to transmit ideas and not products; to be recognized within the ideas and not in the formal instruments used to convey them. Thus, if over the years they have moved systematically between radio, cinema and video, it has been to not shut themselves off in predictable patterns; to not characterize themselves within a defined world; and to test the communicative potential of various media. The very choice of making “films” seems to derive more from passion, or from chance, than from a preordained selection of expressive instruments. When, in 1996, after four years of audiovisual production, Cane CapoVolto began making acoustic films, it was just a technical move, simply the transformation of the communication source, not of the substance of the operation. It was a cinema capable of discovering images, which it seems to lack, thanks to the synesthetic action of a sound capable of evoking them. Suddenly, at one point, Cane CapoVolto even stopped working with Super-8 (except during some sporadic though relatively insignificant incursions) because its aesthetic connotation was too well known, too tied to experimental and underground cinema, too dangerous insofar as it is a limit and no longer an extension. Thus, from the visionary nature of the first works, they moved towards the ideology of their latest experiences (Impero, 2003; The Pentagon TV Commercials, 2004; Aaron, il guerriero digitale, 2005). And the operations on the image (Behind Your Eyelids, 1993) have become operations on their possible articulation: a work on the subject and no longer on their representation. Slowly but surely, Cane CapoVolto seem to move farther to one side, offering up already formalized elements of the world around them (films, documentaries, sounds) in their harshness, as if the suffocation of every lyrical tension did not allow them to act upon the elements, but only to place them in a series.
