In un villaggio del Kurdistan, vicino al confine con l’Iraq,
Faegh ha tre mogli e undici figli. L’occupazione della famiglia
è fabbricare il Daf, il più famoso strumento iraniano
fatto con la pelle di pecora e suonato per celebrare una
nascita o per un lamento funebre. La famiglia di Faegh
accoglie apprendisti fra la povera gente per insegnare loro,
di notte, a suonare il Daf. Il film è una combinazione di
musica e vita.
In a village in Kurdistan, near the Iranian border, Faegh has
three wives and eleven children. The family’s trade is making
Dafs, the most famous of Iranian instruments, made with sheepskin
and played to celebrate a birth or at a funeral. At night,
Faegh’s family receives apprentices from among the poor, to teach
them how to play the Daf. The film is a blend of music and life.
Biografia
Nato nel 1969, ha cominciato a produrre i suoi film amatoriali
con altri giovani registi a Sanandaj. Il suo cortometraggio
Life in Fog ha vinto il Premio Speciale della Giuria
a Clermont-Ferrand. Nel 2000 con The Hours of Drunken
Horses si è aggiudicato il Premio Internazionale della Critica
e la Camera d’Or al festival di Cannes.
Biography
Born in 1969, he began producing his amateur films with other
young directors in Sanandaj. His short film Life in a Fog won
the Special Jury Prize at the Clermont-Ferrand Festival. In
2000, he won the International Critics Prize and the Camera
d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for The Hours of Drunken
Horses.

“Quando mi fu chiesto di girare Digital Search per il JIFF,
ero agitato circa il cosa fare con una camera digitale e il
come farlo. (...) Pensavo che avrei dovuto cercare qualcosa
di nuovo. Sono dominato da questa ossessione proprio
perché è digitale. (...) Con la mia camera digitale ho esplorato
Seoul, il set della mia vita di tutti i giorni, e poi le persone.
Volevo cogliere un aspetto che finora non ero mai
riuscito a fissare. Mi domando cosa scoprirò e come mi
sentirò una volta finita questa mia personale ricerca digitale.”

“When I was asked to shoot Digital Search for JIFF, I was excited
about what to do with a digital camera, and how to do it…. I
thought I would have to seek out something new. I am overwhelmed
by this obsession precisely because it was digital
[video]…. With my camera, I explored Seoul, the set of my
everyday life, as well as its people. I wanted to capture something
that I had never been able to capture before. I wonder what I will
discover and how I will feel once I have finished this personal
digital search of mine.”

Biografia
Nato nel 1961, ha prodotto To the Starry Island di Park
Kwang-su e Cinema on the Road il documentario sul cinema
coreano di Jang Sun-Woo. Nel 1997 ha realizzato il suo primo
lungometraggio, Cactus Motel, che ha ricevuto numerosi
premi. Nel 2001 ha diretto Camel(s).
