Italy, the beginning of the 19th century. Professor Mori, a neuropsychiatrist, is married to Vittoria. Their life seems peaceful, yet the birth of their baby brings triggers a crisis: the newborn refuses his mother’s milk, which in turn leads Vittoria to refuse the boy. Mori decides to hire a young wet-nurse, Annetta, who succeeds in creating a very intimate and physical relationship with the baby. Vittoria grows increasingly more anguished, to the point where she decides to leave home for a while. The wetnurse, who is illiterate and whose companion is in prison for political reasons, asks the professor to teach her to read and write. But it is not only Annetta who will learn something: through the “lessons,” Professor Mori gains a new understanding of his feelings, including in his relationship with his wife. Gianni Canova, La balia, “Segnocinema”, n. 98, luglio-agosto 1999, pp. 37-38. sceneggiatura/screenplay: Marco Bellocchio, Daniela Ceselli (liberamente ispirata all’omonima novella di Luigi Pirandello) fotografia/photography (colore): Giuseppe Lanci montaggio/editing: Francesca Calvelli musica/music: Carlo Crivelli scenografia/art direction: Marco Dentici costumi/costumes: Sergio Ballo interpreti/cast: Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, “The Wet-Nurse is a film about actions that are not seen: a grammar of affections, a list of sentiments, a syntax of the nonvisible. ‘I can’t write about the things that I don’t see,’ says the wet-nurse to the professor who, after his wife runs away, agrees to teach the woman who is keeping his son alive to read and write. Bellocchio tries to do it for her, and for us. He becomes the ‘wet-nurse’ of our gaze and re-teaches us to see. With a ‘pedagogical’ vocation almost unthinkable in his jagged and closed films. With The Wet-Nurse, Bellocchio creates a film made up mostly of actions that are not seen: a film almost without verbs, or a plot of anacolutha. All of the visible actions in the film (the birth, the wife’s departure, the confrontations in the square between the Carabinieri on horseback and the Socialist demonstrators) are syntactically mere subordinates: the main actions – the actions and movements that determine the characters’ ‘feeling’ – are almost all of them hidden in the heart and the soul. They are ‘leaps in the dark’ and ‘butterfly dreams.’ They’re not seen, they can only be imagined. So much so that it is precisely in this film that Bellocchio experiments, like never before, a ‘writing of the imagination,’ which is made up of jerks and ellipses, of sideways glances, of hesitations in the half-light, of ambushes at the window and of revealing epiphanies.” Gianni Canova, “La balia,” Segnocinema, no. 98, July-August, 1999, pp. 37-38.
