Scrivere di cinema di Víctor Erice È così, attraverso la scrittura, che un giorno ho cominciato a pensare il cinema, scoprendo un modo di prolungarne la visione e anche di realizzarlo. Fu nell’estate del 1959, dopo aver visto Les quatre cents coups al Festival di San Sebastián. Al termine della proiezione uscii in strada commosso. E quella stessa notte sentii la necessità di mettere per iscritto le idee ed i sentimenti che le immagini di François Truffaut avevano risvegliato in me. Era la prima volta che mi accadeva qualcosa di simile. Gli anni sono passati da allora e, anche se sono riuscito a girare alcuni film, continuo ancora a scrivere di tanto in tanto. Penso che fra tutte le arti il cinema sia quella che si conosce di meno. Generalmente se ne ignora la storia, ma soprattutto la sua vera natura. Forse, proprio perché il cinema è il più segreto dei linguaggi, è anche il più incompreso. Per qualche tempo interessarsi alla sua essenza ha significato porsi la domanda che a suo momento si fece André Bazin: “Che cosa è il cinema?” Perché allora oggi avvertiamo che questa questione, e la riflessione che l’accompagna, risulta ogni volta più insolita, più impropria, più fuori luogo persino tra i nostri professionisti? Cercando una spiegazione a questo fatto si potrebbe parlare, a seconda dei casi, di mancata conoscenza, di pigrizia intellettuale o di semplice conformismo. Ma in fondo questi motivi non dicono tutto, danno l’impressione di mettere a tacere la spiegazione più semplice, quella che potremmo enunciare in questo modo: non ha senso chiedersi che cosa è il cinema perché non solo non ha futuro, ma soprattutto perché, in un certo senso ha già smesso di esistere; adesso bisogna piuttosto parlare di Audiovisivo. Se parafrasando Louis Lumière “il cinema è un’invenzione senza futuro”, se il futuro è degli altri, che senso ha continuare ad interrogarci sull’essenza di quella che è stata definita settima arte? Più di un apocalittico e più di un integrato sarebbero d’accordo su questo punto. E ciononostante se vogliamo sapere quel che il cinema può essere oggi perché non cominciare col chiederci cosa è stato, cosa abbiamo creduto che fosse, e ciò che è stato in realtà? Si tratta di un orizzonte più ampio di quel che può sembrare a prima vista, perché la revisione di quel passato ci porta a considerare storie così intimamente unite da costituirne una sola: la storia del cinema, la storia del XX secolo. Lo sapevamo senz’altro, ma lo avevamo dimenticato: “Cinematografo, arte del secolo”. Esattamente quel che si disse quando, con un gesto non privo di malizia, gli si volle render giustizia attribuendogli in un colpo solo tutti gli aggettivi del riconoscimento sociale. Mai, nemmeno in quel solenne istante, abbiamo immaginato che con il passare degli anni sarebbe diventato un elemento essenziale della nostra memoria, il recipiente capace di contenere le immagini che meglio riflettono le esperienze umane del secolo che finisce. Come non vedere in quello sguardo che proiettiamo verso il passato, sospeso nell’aria, la figura dell’angelo della melanconia! È in qualche modo inevitabile. Perché quella storia unica – quella del cinema, quella del secolo – si confonde irrimediabilmente con la nostra stessa biografia. And that same night I felt the need to put into writing the ideas and feelings that François Truffaut’s images had awoken in me. It was the first time that something like that had happened to me. Many years have passed since then and even though I have managed to make several films, I continue to write every so often. I think that of all the arts, film is the least well known. Generally, its history is ignored as is, above all, its true nature. Perhaps because film is the most secret of languages, as well as the most misunderstood. For some time, reflecting upon its essence meant asking the question that André Bazin posed in his day: “What is cinema?” Why is it then that today we perceive this question, and the contemplation that accompanies it, to be increasingly less common, more inappropriate, more out of place, even among our professionals? By way of explanation, one could talk about, depending on the situation, a lack of knowledge, intellectual laziness or simple conformism. Yet, ultimately, these reasons are not comprehensive, they give the impression of silencing the simplest explanation, the one we could express accordingly: it makes no sense to ask what cinema is because not only does it have no future, it has, furthermore, in a certain sense, already ceased to exist. Now we must speak instead of the “audiovisual.” If, to paraphrase Louis Lumière, “the cinema is an invention without a future,” if the future belongs to others, what sense is there in continuing to question the essence of that which has been deemed the seventh art? More than one apocalyptic or extremist person would agree on this point. And despite this, if we want to know what cinema can be today why don’t we begin by asking ourselves what it has been, what we believed it to be, and what it really was? The horizon is broader than it may seem at first glance because re-examing the past leads us to consider histories so intimately intertwined – the history of cinema and the history of the 20th century – that they make up only one single history. Something we most certainly knew yet forgot is: “Cinema, the art of the century.” That is exactly what was said when, with a gesture not lacking malice, those who wanted to do justice to cinema attributed to it all the adjectives of social recognition in one blow. Never, not even in that solemn moment, could we have imagined that with the passing of time it would have been become an essential element of our memory, a container capable of holding the images that best reflect the human experience of the past century. How can we not see, in that gaze that we project towards the past, suspended in the air, the figure of the angel of melancholy! It is, in some way, inevitable. Because this sole history – that of cinema and the century combined – becomes irreversibly mixed up with our own biography. I speak on behalf of those of my generation, born in the time of silence and ruins that followed our last civil war. Whether real or symbolic orphans, cinema adopted us, offering us extraordinary consolation: the feeling of belonging to the world.
