piatto teso all’azzeramento gravitazionale capace di
Desideri continuamente
rileggere temi iconografici e suggestioni letterarie.
staccarmi.
Video, pellicola, fotografia, tutti mezzi e supporti nei confronti
dei quali hai un approccio artigianale. Come operi?
scultorea utilizzando lame affilate e lasciando
manualità artigianale agli effetti digitali e concentrandomi
I primi lavori nascevano
muovendosi in amniotici campi armonici mai esattamente
definiti.
mostre d’arte contemporanea, mercato dell’arte in generale. Cosa
come giustamente ti definisci?
creaking contraptions of Ubu’s traps: set apart from the history
of his time, unaware of his skill for inventing words to
describe new methods of torture, justifying them with the utopia
of Pataphysics. It is the geography of the body with all its needs
that wins .
25 works in just five years (and that’s not counting all of
them)! This could be called hyper-creativity, almost a
physiological need.
The work arose from the total exclusion of the word as meaning,
in favor of the body suspended in a flat space that aims towards
gravitational eradication capable of eliminating all kinds of hierarchy.
Furthermore, digital is nothing more than a Byzantinelike
mathematical reinvention (for its mosaic of pixels) of the
image. This is where the physiological need to commit the impure
act of immortalizing and collecting comes from.
Your style is highly recognizable and is always connected
to the search for “form.” You continuously go back over
iconographic themes and literary impressions. Why do
you love “revealing” your artistic passions so manifestly?
“Revealing” is tied to mystery and has a strong erotic connotation
that I try to reject in favor of an analytical “display of abundance”:
a restoration of known iconography, kneaded up in
Baroque reprocessing in order to perhaps surround myself with
the beloved surplus from which I, in true Don Quixotian manner,
cannot separate myself.
Video, film, photography: all are mediums towards which
you have an artisan’s approach. How do you work?
The iconoclasms on (to) the negative are photographs that start
off as negative 35mm film, on which I perform a sculptural
extraction, using sharp blades and leaving only the bodies
immersed in a spermatic void that flakes their edges, to arrive at
the print. In the videos, I nick all that which creates the frame
during shooting, preferring manual craftsmanship over digital
effects and concentrating above all on the sound texture in postproduction.
Music plays a central role in your work. How do you
choose it and how do you collaborate on the original compositions?
Music is the engine that drives everything. The first works arose
from the desire to create a videohit of bodies, rather than stories,
involuntarily struck by the rhythm. Later, thanks to Final Cut,
from the total transfer of a track, I began working on the meticulous
outlining of the sound: Macerie dell’Arcobaleno is one
such example, with its breaths and creaks reconstructed in the
studio, and Gabriele Panico’s solemn music, which progresses
along stratifications, moving in amniotic, harmonic fields that
are never precisely defined.
Your works have various destinations: film festivals, contemporary
art exhibits, and the general art market. What is
your view on the conditions in which a “multi-media”
artist, as you rightfully define yourself, finds him or herself
today?
Mine is local multi-media, whereby local does not mean folklore
but home: to flood one’s room with the most disparate events,
ruminate them, digest them and then spit them back out. It’s
very similar to what the Brazilian monks do, shut off in their
monasteries.... The product then travels beyond.
