The negative effects <strong>of</strong> bureaucracy in universities are still being felt (5.1 rating).
• Grant awards and distinctions have been noted by students who consider that recognition <strong>of</strong>
merit is important.
6. Conclusions and recommendations
Within <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> a KBES, sustainable development needs to emphasize <strong>the</strong> endogenous sources
<strong>of</strong> knowledge, innovation, human capital, intangible assets, etc. In KBES, <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> universities and
higher education institutions in economics and business are <strong>the</strong> main investors in lifelong learning is
extremely important. Universities are actively involved in <strong>the</strong> production, transmission and
dissemination <strong>of</strong> knowledge, essential processes for KBES. Through our own research we tried to
capture <strong>the</strong> perception on <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> universities in KBES in Romania. Our study focused on
identifying students' perceptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> universities in supporting <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong>
knowledge economy in Romania and to highlight <strong>the</strong> extent to which students consider that <strong>the</strong>
Romanian economic university system is ready to face <strong>the</strong> demands <strong>of</strong> KBES. The results showed
that students are in general satisfied with <strong>the</strong>ir institutions but <strong>the</strong> key challenges for a knowledgebased
economy and society have been pointed out. The importance <strong>of</strong> developing online education
programs in universities in Romania is seen as an urgent requirement for KBES. Students expressed
<strong>the</strong> need for practical work in courses and seminars, and training in universities and matching <strong>the</strong>m
with <strong>the</strong> labour market requirements. In terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> extent to which universities in Romania are able
to engage effectively in KBES, two points have been highlighted: to reduce inefficiencies in <strong>the</strong>
organization <strong>of</strong> activities and projects that will include information campaigns on <strong>the</strong> rights <strong>of</strong> students,
and to grant awards and distinctions in recognition to merit.However, <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> our research
represent only a point <strong>of</strong> view and we remain open to dialog and continuing <strong>the</strong> research by engaging
ourselves in trans- and inter-disciplinary research groups.
