Bayetix, a supposed mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> autonomous Dukes <strong>of</strong> Normandy.<br />

Bayonne, a place where, in 1377, an ordinance <strong>of</strong> Edward III. accorded<br />

to John <strong>of</strong> Gaunt <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> striking money in all metals, provided that<br />

it was distinguished from that <strong>of</strong> England and Aquitaine. No specimens<br />

appear to be known. A piece <strong>of</strong> 12 sols <strong>of</strong> Louis XV. <strong>of</strong> France, 1772,<br />

was struck here.<br />

Beancaire, <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archbp. <strong>of</strong> Aries from <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> 1<br />

3th to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I5th c., and an unauthorised place <strong>of</strong> coinage<br />

during <strong>the</strong> war and disorder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> League, 1586. The Seigneur de<br />

Damville, Constable <strong>of</strong> Montmorency, also struck money (pieces <strong>of</strong> 6-<br />

blanques = 24 deniers), to pay <strong>the</strong> troops <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> insurgents, at Villeneuve<br />

and Bagnols.<br />

Bcaulieu, near Loches, Vicomte" <strong>of</strong> Turenne, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />

viscounts and <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> an abbey. In 1190 Raimond II., V. de T.,<br />

when he left France for <strong>the</strong> Holy Land granted <strong>the</strong> abbot <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong><br />

striking money at B. with a ti<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>its.<br />

A supposed place <strong>of</strong><br />

coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Anjou, loth-nth c.<br />

Beaumont, Hainault, a seigniorial mint <strong>of</strong> Baudouin d'Avesnes, I3th c.,<br />

where were struck gros au cavalier or rijder-grooten with B. LfAvenis<br />

Dns. Bellimontis. See Cat. Robert, 1886, No. 259, where an inedited<br />

variety is figured. It may be mentioned that at B.-le-Roger in Normandy<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was probably no coinage.<br />

Beauvais, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Oise, a Carlovingian and Capetian mint under <strong>the</strong><br />

bishops, who from <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nth c.<br />

enjoyed <strong>the</strong> temporalities.<br />

Roger de Blois, 1001-22, also struck money at Nogent-sur-Eure, which<br />

was part <strong>of</strong> his domain. A denier and obole <strong>of</strong> nerve", Bishop <strong>of</strong> Ponthieu,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Hugh Capet associated, and Belvacus Ci-vitas,<br />

belong here. The mint did not survive beyond 1312-15.<br />

Bechevilain, Lyons, a chateau <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> archbp., 1373, where it<br />

appears<br />

that he had a mint, and counterfeited <strong>the</strong> regal types during four years.<br />

Beckuni, Pruss. Westphalia, a place <strong>of</strong> coinage, I4th c., with two wild<br />

sows courant.<br />

Belgiojoso, Lombardy, probably <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a scudo <strong>of</strong><br />

silver and a gold zecchino <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prince <strong>of</strong> B., Antonio da Barbiano,<br />

unless indeed <strong>the</strong>se pieces were struck at Vienna. The die <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scudo<br />

has <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> an Italian origin.<br />

Belgrade, capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> Serbia or Servia, and <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> national coinage since 1867.<br />

Bellac, La Marche, a mint <strong>of</strong> Hugues, Comte de la Marche, established<br />

in 12 1 1.<br />
