Liegnitz, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Silesia in <strong>the</strong> I3th c., and <strong>of</strong> successive<br />

rulers, including <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Brieg and Dukes <strong>of</strong> Liegnitz-Brieg,<br />

down to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I7th c. The writer has a 6-groschen piece struck<br />

by George Wilhelm, 1673. The Dukes also struck at Reichenstein.<br />

The town acquired <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> coinage in 1425 from <strong>the</strong> King <strong>of</strong> Poland.<br />

There are uniface hellers or pfennigen in 1622 with L.<br />

Ligny, originally a fief detached from <strong>the</strong> county <strong>of</strong> Bar in 1231 as<br />

<strong>the</strong> dowry <strong>of</strong> Marguerite, daughter <strong>of</strong> Henri II., on her marriage to <strong>the</strong><br />

Duke <strong>of</strong> Limbourg. Coins in gold, silver, and billon were struck here<br />

in considerable proportions in <strong>the</strong> I4th c., including some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> money<br />

<strong>of</strong> John <strong>of</strong> Luxemburgh, King <strong>of</strong> Bohemia. From letters <strong>of</strong> indemnity <strong>of</strong><br />

1376 we learn that at that time <strong>the</strong> dies for <strong>the</strong> coins struck by successive<br />

C. <strong>of</strong> L. in <strong>the</strong> I4th c. agnels, francs a cheval, ecus d'or, nobles, gros,<br />

and deniers were in <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> a goldsmith named Guesclin le Charpentier.<br />

Moneta De Lineio.<br />

Lille, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Flemish towns which struck <strong>the</strong> maille at a very<br />

early period with LI. It is mentioned as a place <strong>of</strong> coinage under<br />

Baudouin V., Count <strong>of</strong> Flanders, 1036-67. Insvlae, quasi L Isle, occurs<br />

on some pieces. The ecu de Navarre <strong>of</strong> Louis XV., 1718, was from this<br />

mint, which was employed both by that king and Louis XVI. Pieces <strong>of</strong><br />

5, 10, and 20 sols in copper were struck by <strong>the</strong> French governor, M. de
