Charles de France, bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Louis XI., 1469-71 <strong>of</strong> ; Henry III. <strong>of</strong><br />

Valois, 1576; <strong>of</strong> Louis XV., 1731-42; and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> later French rulers,<br />

m.m. a ship.<br />

La Tour d Glaire, Ardennes, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Seigneurs <strong>of</strong> Chateau-<br />

Renaud or Renault, in <strong>the</strong> I7th c. This and Charleville, equally with<br />

Bouillon, imitated o<strong>the</strong>r types. Both Nicolas Briot and Daniel G<strong>of</strong>fin<br />

were employed here and at Charleville, etc., as engravers.<br />

Lauenburg, Pomerania, apparently <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a \ thaler<br />

<strong>of</strong> Frederic VI. <strong>of</strong> Denmark, 1830.<br />

Lausanne, a Merovingian mint, and from <strong>the</strong> Qth to <strong>the</strong> I4th c. a<br />

place <strong>of</strong> coinage for <strong>the</strong> See and town. Some pieces bear on obv. Sedes<br />

Lavsane, and on rev. Civitas; o<strong>the</strong>rs, Bcata Virgo. The former arose<br />

from <strong>the</strong> traditional belief that this place was <strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />

Civitas Equestris. The types were copied by <strong>the</strong> feudal Lords <strong>of</strong> Vaud.<br />

Lavagna, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fieschi family, i6th c. Cotn. Lavanie.<br />

La Vanctte, Barony <strong>of</strong> Les Hayons, Luxemburgh, <strong>the</strong> mint in <strong>the</strong> I7th<br />

c. <strong>of</strong> Lambert d'Oyenbrugge de Duras, brigadier in <strong>the</strong> French army,<br />

1624. A variety <strong>of</strong> coins proceeded from this place, chiefly imitations or<br />

contrefac.ons <strong>of</strong> Niirnberg, Frankfort, Hamburg, Bouillon, Holland, etc.;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> engraver, Daniel G<strong>of</strong>fin, was employed here. A demi-patagon<br />

bears Lambertiis De Duras B\ard\ Suprennis Hayoncn. From <strong>the</strong> disappearance<br />

<strong>of</strong> what must have been a considerable coinage it may be<br />

inferred that <strong>the</strong> mint was suppressed.<br />

Lecce, Naples, a Neapolitan mint, 1495-99.<br />

Lecco, Lombardy, a mint <strong>of</strong> a branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Medici, 1431. Co. Le-vci.<br />

L'Ecluse, or Sltiys. See Slu'ys.<br />

Lcctoure, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Ger, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vicomtes de L., Lomagne, and<br />

D'Auvilars, who represented <strong>the</strong> Comtes d'Armagnac, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> Edward III. <strong>of</strong> England as Duke <strong>of</strong> Aquitaine. The town in<br />

ancient times was divided into three quarters: <strong>the</strong> Bishop's, <strong>the</strong> Viscount's,<br />

<strong>the</strong> King's or Duke's. Lactora Civ., Cii'itas Efi. or Santigino.<br />

Lceuardcn, W. Friesland, a mint for <strong>the</strong> province in <strong>the</strong> i6th c.<br />

There is a silver piece <strong>of</strong> 28 stuivers, 1580, with Mo. No. Ord. Frist. s.<br />

Lcwwar. Cvsa., and a second <strong>of</strong> about <strong>the</strong> same date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Daventer<br />

type, punched with L., probably for this place. We do not know whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2O-ducat piece <strong>of</strong> 1601 with <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> W. Friesland on obv. and <strong>the</strong><br />

legend Antiqva Virtvte et Fide, and on rev. <strong>the</strong> legend Concordia<br />

Frisicc Libertas, with four shields (for <strong>the</strong> four divisions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov.)<br />

united by a riband, may not be assigned here.<br />

Leeucn, Gelderland, <strong>the</strong> reputed source <strong>of</strong> a denier with Lewe and a<br />

head facing.<br />

Leghorn, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Medicean Dukes <strong>of</strong> Florence or Etrtiria.<br />

Lciningen, Baden, Alt or Old, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

money struck and issued by <strong>the</strong> early Counts after 1608, <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

original monetary concession, though o<strong>the</strong>r towns (Hardenberg, Dachsburg,<br />

Westerburg, etc.) shared <strong>the</strong> coinage. There are pieces with Lein.<br />

Et. Dags. Com. in Lein. Et. Rixing.<br />

Lcipsic, Saxony, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> bracteates in <strong>the</strong> I2th c., and<br />

<strong>the</strong> general mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Saxony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ernestine branch from<br />

<strong>the</strong> 15th c. There is a bracteate with Marchio. Otto. De. Lipi. Some<br />

pieces have Lipcens, o<strong>the</strong>rs, S. L. for Signuin Lipsiense. On some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

currency <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Saxony bear <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> Margraves <strong>of</strong> Misnia or<br />

Meissen. There is a rare piece struck during <strong>the</strong> siege by <strong>the</strong> Saxons
