rev. a cross. In and after 1397 <strong>the</strong> Ban or Waiwode <strong>of</strong> Bosnia, on<br />

behalf <strong>of</strong> Sigismund, King <strong>of</strong> Hungary, struck here various coins bearing<br />

a shield with an armed arm and his titles as supreme waiwode or voyvode<br />

<strong>of</strong> Bosnia and vicar <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> Lladislaus, and on rev. <strong>the</strong><br />

patron-saint, St. Dominus or Doimus. The grossi coined here by <strong>the</strong><br />

feudal dukes formed a source <strong>of</strong> trouble to Venice, as it was represented<br />

in 1410 that <strong>the</strong> standard was below that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic and injured her<br />

interests.<br />

Spira, an ecclesiastical mint for <strong>the</strong> Archbishops.<br />

Spoleto, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a bracteate danaro, struck on a large<br />

flan, with Wido. Gragia. Di. Re. It was struck by Guido, Lord <strong>of</strong> Spoleto,<br />

939-44, who probably occupied <strong>the</strong> ancient castle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exarchs <strong>of</strong><br />

Ravenna. Spoleto also produced a few anonymous ecclesiastical coins<br />

with Spoletanvs, or Spoleto, on rev., and was a place <strong>of</strong> papal coinage,<br />

said to have been founded in <strong>the</strong> 7th c. by Sigebert, King <strong>of</strong> Austrasia.<br />

There is abbatial money <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> i6th c. with <strong>the</strong> imperial titles on<br />

rev.<br />

Stavoren, on <strong>the</strong> Zuyder Zee, formerly a town <strong>of</strong> great importance, a<br />

mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early Counts <strong>of</strong> West Friesland in <strong>the</strong> nth c. It is at<br />

present an insignificant village.<br />

Steenwijk, Holland, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a coinage <strong>of</strong> necessity during <strong>the</strong><br />

siege by <strong>the</strong> French in 1580, and perhaps also during that by Maurice <strong>of</strong><br />

Nassau in 1591.<br />

Stein, or Steyn, Austrian Illyria, a seigniorial mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I4th c.,<br />

where <strong>the</strong> boetdrager <strong>of</strong> Louis de Maele, Count <strong>of</strong> Holland, was imitated.<br />

Albrecht, struck <strong>the</strong>re in 1513. The town acquired <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> coinage<br />

and reunited in 1625. There is a pr<strong>of</strong>usion <strong>of</strong> early bracteates with an<br />

infinite variety <strong>of</strong> designs. The Dukes had nearly thirty o<strong>the</strong>r mints,
