to 1525, and were continued by <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Schlick ;<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is a double one (doppelter zwitter thaler) <strong>of</strong> Stephen,<br />

1526.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coinage subsequently to <strong>the</strong><br />

devolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crown on Ferdinand <strong>of</strong> Austria in 1527,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is not much to be predicated beyond <strong>the</strong> remarkable<br />

series <strong>of</strong> raitgroschen or ritgroschen in copper, struck for<br />

this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> empire about I 5 70. We have met with <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r salient feature<br />

dates 1572, 1583, and 1605 <strong>the</strong> ; only<br />

under <strong>the</strong> present section is <strong>the</strong> brief and limited currency<br />

<strong>of</strong> Frederic, Count Palatine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rhine, during his more or<br />

less nominal tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regal title in <strong>the</strong> years 1619-20.<br />

The career <strong>of</strong> Frederic forms a chapter in <strong>the</strong> Thirty Years'<br />

War and from his nearness<br />

; by marriage to <strong>the</strong> Stuarts,"<br />

<strong>the</strong>se numismatic relics derive a special attraction in <strong>the</strong><br />

eyes <strong>of</strong> Englishmen and Americans. He appears to have<br />

issued nothing beyond silver pieces <strong>of</strong> 48 and 24 kreutzer.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>the</strong>re are two distinct types : one dated 1619,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> lion <strong>of</strong> Bohemia on reverse and a crown on obverse ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r with a portrait and a shield <strong>of</strong> arms, and <strong>the</strong><br />

date<br />

Frederic <strong>of</strong> Bohemia :<br />

1620. The larger coin, also belonging to 1620, bears a<br />

different bust. All are uncommon. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> later<br />

Austrian copper money for Bohemia exhibits <strong>the</strong> value and<br />

date on one side and <strong>the</strong> lion on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, dispensing with<br />

a legend. A pfenning <strong>of</strong> this class before us has I P.<br />

1758.<br />
