Foscari (1423-57), and existing in two types. See Antiquary,<br />

Grossone, a silver coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Two Sicilies under Ferdinand and<br />

Isabella. The obv. and rev. divide <strong>the</strong> names and titles. On <strong>the</strong> latter<br />

is a yoke and a sheaf <strong>of</strong> arrows.<br />

Grossone, a silver coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Pisa under <strong>the</strong> Emperors,<br />

but sometimes with autonomous legends. One has on obv. Popvli<br />

Pisani, and on rev. <strong>the</strong> Virgin and Child with Protege. Virgo. Pisa.<br />

Charles VIII. <strong>of</strong> France also struck a grossone here with his titles and<br />

<strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> France, but with Pisanorvin Lib. in <strong>the</strong> obv. legend.<br />

Grosz, pi. groszy, <strong>the</strong> Polish form <strong>of</strong> grosch, and a very early denomination<br />

in that country. A \ grosz <strong>of</strong> Sigismund<br />

I. occurs with <strong>the</strong><br />

date 1509. The coin remained in use under <strong>the</strong> later kings, and under<br />

Russian rule, in pieces <strong>of</strong> J, i, and 3 gr. There is a 10 groszy Pols in<br />

poor silver and a 3 gr. in copper, apparently struck at Brussels, and<br />

issued during <strong>the</strong> political disturbances <strong>of</strong> 1831.<br />

Grote, a billon or silver coin, with its multiples and moiety, <strong>of</strong><br />

Bremen, Oldenburgh, etc. It was also struck by <strong>the</strong> Seigneurs <strong>of</strong><br />

Jever, Oldenburgh, etc., and by <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Bentinck at Knijphausen,<br />

down to <strong>the</strong> present century. A piece <strong>of</strong> 9 gr. is cited by Schulman,<br />

ix. 514.<br />

Guelfo grosso, a term applied to a variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> silver fiorino <strong>of</strong><br />

Florence, with <strong>the</strong> standing figure <strong>of</strong> St. John. There are several<br />

varieties. This coin appears to have been struck in 1363, and one type<br />

has a fox under <strong>the</strong> saint's feet, significant <strong>of</strong> Pietro Farnese, general-inchief<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Florentine forces ; it is said to have been struck under <strong>the</strong><br />

walls <strong>of</strong> Pisa. Cat. Rossi, i. 1880, Nos. 1290-95. Instead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> usual<br />

legend on <strong>the</strong> rev. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> silver fiorino it reads Dct Tibi Florere Christus<br />

Florentia Vere.<br />

Guenar and demi-guenar, a name applied to <strong>the</strong> blanque for Dauphiny,<br />

with a cross on rev. cantoned with two a Its, crown, and a dolphin. A<br />

blanc and i blanc <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same reign for ordinary circulation followed <strong>the</strong><br />

type with variations ;<br />

and Charles VI. issued o<strong>the</strong>r patterns for<br />

Dauphiny itself. Henry V. <strong>of</strong> England, also had <strong>the</strong> blanc gue"nar.<br />

There was a curious trouvaille a few years ago at Vucht, near Bois-le-<br />

Duc, <strong>of</strong> a type <strong>of</strong> this denomination, suspected to be <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> a<br />

coeval forger.<br />

Guiennois, a gold coin in <strong>the</strong> Anglo-Gallic series.<br />

Guiennois, a billon piece in <strong>the</strong> same series, <strong>the</strong> loth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> g.<br />

Guillemin, a term applied to <strong>the</strong> municipal currency <strong>of</strong> Forcalquier,<br />

Provence, in <strong>the</strong> I2th c.<br />

Guinea, <strong>the</strong> name which appears on <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> a commemorative gold<br />

coin struck at Christiania on <strong>the</strong> accession <strong>of</strong> Christian VI., 1730.<br />

Guishem or Guillem, a species <strong>of</strong> currency in billon <strong>of</strong> low standard<br />

struck by Jean de Grailly, Comte de Foix, and interdicted in 1421-22 by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Crown.
