Medici (1536-74), reinstated St. John, but assumed <strong>the</strong> title<br />

<strong>of</strong> Grand-Duke <strong>of</strong> Etrnria. To his long and important<br />

reign belong <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Florentine coinage on<br />

a greatly improved basis and <strong>the</strong> introduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scudo<br />

di argento, for which several variant dies were made, perhaps<br />

by Domenigo di Polo. The earliest reads on obverse, Cosmvs<br />

Med, Magnvs. Di
