Curange, or Cttrengen, A near Hasselt, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prince-bishops <strong>of</strong><br />

Liege, I5th c. copper Hard <strong>of</strong> Louis de Bourbon, 1456-82, who on<br />

one <strong>of</strong> his coins calls himself Leo Dux, was struck <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

Daalhcm, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Brabant in <strong>the</strong> I3th c.<br />

Damme, near Bruges, a temporary mint <strong>of</strong> Gui de Dampierre, Count<br />

<strong>of</strong> Flanders, in 1299, during <strong>the</strong> French occupation <strong>of</strong> Bruges.<br />

Damvillers, a mint <strong>of</strong> John <strong>of</strong> Luxemburgh, King <strong>of</strong> Bohemia, 1342,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> Charles IV. as Count <strong>of</strong> Luxemburgh, 1346-53.<br />

Dantzic, a principal mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> independent Kings <strong>of</strong> Poland and <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Teutonic Order. There is a fine series <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gold and silver coinage<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former, and schillings and ducats <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter. The urban coinage<br />

consisted <strong>of</strong> base schillings and copper solidi. During <strong>the</strong> siege by <strong>the</strong><br />

Prince <strong>of</strong> Transylvania in 1577, besides silver and several foreign coins<br />

countermarked with <strong>the</strong> city arms, a gold ducat appeared with <strong>the</strong><br />

standing figure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Saviour, and Defende Nos Chrt'ste Salvator on obv.,<br />

and on rev. Moneta Nova Civitatis Gedanensis. There is a grosch <strong>of</strong><br />

1812 with Dansiger Kupfer Muenze.<br />

Darmstadt, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rulers <strong>of</strong> Hesse-Darmstadt, commencing<br />

with Charlemagne, <strong>of</strong> whom <strong>the</strong>re was a denier in <strong>the</strong> Luni find.<br />

Daventer, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops <strong>of</strong> Utrecht, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> autonomous<br />

or foreign rulers <strong>of</strong> Overijssel, ioth-i6th c. There is a gold denier <strong>of</strong><br />

Conrad <strong>of</strong> Swabia, bp. 1076-99, and a silver one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same type. There<br />

is a variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> denier struck in <strong>the</strong> episcopal series, sede vacante, by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Provost <strong>of</strong> Daventer, who managed <strong>the</strong> temporalities<br />

till <strong>the</strong> new<br />

prelate was appointed. In 1197 Theodor Dirk was P. In <strong>the</strong> imperial<br />

series we have met with nothing prior to Otto I. 936-73 <strong>the</strong>se coins are<br />

imitations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cologne deniers, with S. Davnt. la. in retrograde<br />

lettering, and a cross cantoned with pellets. In 1578 money <strong>of</strong> necessity<br />

Groot <strong>of</strong> Jan van Arkel, Bishop <strong>of</strong> Utrecht. 1341-64.<br />

a daalder and a \ d. in silver, and 4, 2, i, and stuivers in copper was<br />

struck at D. ;<br />

and again in 1672, during <strong>the</strong> siege by <strong>the</strong> Bp. <strong>of</strong> Munster<br />

and <strong>the</strong> French, square silver pieces were issued. The 1578 series is<br />

countermarked with an eagle. There is a rare liard <strong>of</strong> Philip II. struck<br />

at D. with P. in <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> obverse.<br />

Dax, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Landes, formerly an Anglo -Gallic mint, and one <strong>of</strong><br />

those employed by Edward III. as Duke <strong>of</strong> Aquitaine. In 1380, Edward<br />

conceded <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> striking money here in all metals to his son, John<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gaunt ;<br />

but no specimens seem to survive. Comp. Bayonne.<br />
