The original territories <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Savoy were<br />

limited to <strong>the</strong> provinces <strong>of</strong> Savoy and Maurienne, which<br />

were conferred at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tenth century on<br />

a son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Marquis <strong>of</strong> Tuscany by Rodolph,<br />

King <strong>of</strong> Burgundy. The Counts subsequently acquired <strong>the</strong><br />

Genevois, Chablais, Faucigny (1310), Vaud (1350), Piedmont,<br />

Monteferrato, part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Milanese, and Sardinia. The<br />

county became a duchy in 1416, and a kingdom in 1720.<br />

The princes <strong>of</strong> this house were titular Kings <strong>of</strong> Cyprus as<br />

representatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lusignan dynasty. When <strong>the</strong> kingdom<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sardinia merged in 1861 in that <strong>of</strong> United Italy, <strong>the</strong><br />

patrimonial or ancestral estates in Savoy and Piedmont<br />

passed by treaty to France.<br />

The link with France had been periodically streng<strong>the</strong>ned<br />

by intermarriages and alliances ;<br />

but <strong>the</strong> geographical<br />

situation <strong>of</strong> Savoy brought its rulers and people equally into<br />

contact with Italy and Switzerland, and <strong>the</strong> Savoyard<br />

coinage chiefly leans to <strong>the</strong> Italian side.<br />

The series opens abruptly with deniers in billon <strong>of</strong><br />

Umberto II.<br />
