Vettore Emmanuele as King <strong>of</strong> Italy, 1860 <strong>the</strong><br />

a silver centre; and <strong>the</strong> soldo in copper (dated 1861). An early peculiarity<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coins, which was followed elsewhere, is <strong>the</strong> separation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

last letter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name Bononia from <strong>the</strong> rest, and its<br />

assignment to <strong>the</strong><br />

centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> piece; we see it in a danaro <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nth c., with <strong>the</strong> name<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor Henry V. (i 106-25) on obv. and Bononi A. on rev. Comp.<br />

Antignate.<br />

Bolsivcrd, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> West Friesland, 1038-90. There<br />

is a double groat struck here, with <strong>the</strong> date 1478. Sch., Cat. vii. 239.<br />

Bodlinivert.<br />

Jjommel, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mints <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Burgundy as Dukes <strong>of</strong><br />

Gueldres, I5th c. Also one for a local coinage, and for money struck<br />

during a siege by <strong>the</strong> Spaniards, 1599 (a J gulden, a stuiver or sol, and<br />

a dute or doit). The piece exists in silver and tin, both on a square<br />

flan ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> second is in silver mint mark, a pomegranate and <strong>the</strong> last<br />

;<br />

in copper. There are two varieties <strong>of</strong> a piece <strong>of</strong> 2 stuivers and a ^<br />

thaler.<br />

Bandar oi,<br />

near Pithiviers, a seigneurie ceded by Philip le Bel to Hugues<br />

de Bonville in exchange for Chapelle-la-Reine, with <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> coinage.<br />

Bonn, Prussia, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kings <strong>of</strong> Austrasia (Bo.\ and possibly<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bona which appears on <strong>the</strong> reverse <strong>of</strong> a denier <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor Henry<br />

II., 1002-24. Some coins bear Beata Verona Vinces. Also a seat <strong>of</strong><br />

coinage <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earlier Bishops <strong>of</strong> Cologne, I4th c. During <strong>the</strong><br />

siege by Ernst <strong>of</strong> Bavaria and <strong>the</strong> Spaniards in 1583, a thaler, with <strong>the</strong><br />

i and j, bearing <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> See <strong>of</strong> Cologne, was issued.<br />

Borbeck, Rhenish Prussia, a place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Abbey <strong>of</strong> Essen<br />

(1459-89). Comp. Essen.<br />

Bordeaux, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chief centres <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Visigothic kingdom and <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> independent duchy <strong>of</strong> Gascony. It was a mint at least from <strong>the</strong> 8thc.<br />

The most ancient pieces appear to be those bearing Leutario and<br />

Burdegal; <strong>the</strong>ir attribution is uncertain. O<strong>the</strong>rs read Lodoicus, supposed<br />

Young, 936-54. B. was a prominent<br />

seat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Anglo-Gallic coinage, as well as <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kings <strong>of</strong> France as<br />

Dukes <strong>of</strong> Aquitaine, and an occasional one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> later French monarchs.<br />

In 1186, Richard Coeurde Lion gave to <strong>the</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong> St. Andre at Bordeaux<br />

a third <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> revenue <strong>of</strong> his mint <strong>the</strong>re ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> right was bought by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Crown only in 1709.<br />

Borgo di San Scpolcro or Sabourg, near San Remo, <strong>the</strong> apparent place<br />

<strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> certain money <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I7th c., struck here by <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Abbot <strong>of</strong> Saint Honorat de Lerins, on <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>of</strong> Provence, pursuant<br />

to a grant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sovereignty <strong>of</strong> Borgo by <strong>the</strong> Comte de Ventimiglia as far<br />

back as 954. There may have been o<strong>the</strong>r and earlier examples; but only<br />

pieces <strong>of</strong> 1669 and 1671 appear to be known, with Monast. Lerincnse.<br />

P\rinceps\ Sepvl. and svb innbra sedi, etc. The coinage was suppressed<br />

in 1686.<br />

Borgonuowo della Roccfietta, a place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spinola family,<br />

Borgo San Stefano, a place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Doria family, 1668.<br />

Borgo-Taro, Parma, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> princely family <strong>of</strong> Landi, i6th c.<br />

There are quattrini in copper <strong>of</strong> Federico, <strong>the</strong> fifth prince, with D. Fed.<br />

Land. V. Tari. Comp. Bardi and Coinpiano.<br />

Borne, Overijssel, a seigniorial mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I4th c. with Dns. Born.<br />
