and on rev. a cross surcharged with <strong>the</strong> besanted shield, and cantoned<br />

with four castles. The king bears on his shoulder a similar shield, and<br />

before and behind <strong>the</strong> bust occur L.P. in a monogram, surmounted by a<br />

besant.<br />

Barile, a silver type used by Alexander de' Medici, first Duke <strong>of</strong><br />

Florence, 1531-7. It has <strong>the</strong> figure <strong>of</strong> St. John <strong>the</strong> Baptist to r.<br />

Barrinba, a gold colonial coin <strong>of</strong> Portugal <strong>of</strong> low standard, struck<br />

for Mozambique, and reckoned as = 2^ meticaes or 66 cruzados de conta,<br />

each cr.= loo reis. There was <strong>the</strong> half, igth c. (1847-53).<br />

Bastido, bastioes, a silver denomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Portuguese Indies = 300<br />

reis, and struck at Goa under Sebastian about 1551-54, deriving its name<br />

from <strong>the</strong> figure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cognominal saint on obv.<br />

Batz, a small plated or copper coin <strong>of</strong> Switzerland and Germany (Baden,<br />

Wiirtemburg, etc.), but (from <strong>the</strong> name) probably originating in Berne.<br />

There are pieces <strong>of</strong> from 2 to 48 batzen, <strong>the</strong> higher values being in fine<br />

silver. 10 batzen = I frank.<br />

Bazaruco, a billon Portuguese coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I7th c. (1617), apparently<br />

struck at Goa under <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Viceroy <strong>of</strong> India, having on<br />

obv. F\ilippus\ II. R\ex~\ P\prtugalli
