The Savoyard deniers and o<strong>the</strong>r money struck within this territory from<br />

1273 to 1536 probably belong to Geneva or Lausanne some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are<br />

marked with IV. The cantonal coinage dates only from <strong>the</strong> present<br />

silver ecu <strong>of</strong> Louis XVI., 1792, is countermarked to pass for 40 batzen<br />

or 4 franken within this district.<br />

Vauvillcrs, Haute-Saone, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a seigniorial mint, denounced by<br />

an edict <strong>of</strong> 1554 as <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> unlicensed imitations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regal and<br />

imperial types <strong>the</strong> carolus <strong>of</strong><br />

; Besanc.on was copied. Chatelet in <strong>the</strong><br />

Vosges was included in <strong>the</strong> charge. But <strong>the</strong>re seems to have been an extensive<br />

coinage in all metals at <strong>the</strong> latter place. A denier <strong>of</strong> Gauthier de<br />

Beauffremont has Mo. Ar. Sup. Vvsis. Nicole 1 1. du Chastelet, 1525-62,<br />

struck t'cus an soldi and many o<strong>the</strong>r types with Nicolaus du Chastelet,<br />

or Nicol. A Castelleto Sup. Vusis, and Moneta Dni DC Vaui'illers. The<br />

Hard and double Hard were struck here. The known coinage seems to<br />

be limited to <strong>the</strong>se two persons.<br />

Vendomc, originally belonging to <strong>the</strong> county <strong>of</strong> Anjou, and supposed<br />

to have been at one time an appanage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> See <strong>of</strong> Chartres, whose prelates<br />

were seigneurs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chateau <strong>of</strong> V. Reunited to <strong>the</strong> Crown in<br />

1712. In this town and district use was long made <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> currencies <strong>of</strong><br />

Tours and Angers, and <strong>the</strong> autonomous coinage cannot be referred to a<br />

date anterior to <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I ith c. The Counts, afterwards Dukes,<br />

<strong>of</strong> V. did not place <strong>the</strong>ir name on <strong>the</strong> money till <strong>the</strong> I3th c. The earlier<br />

types are imitations <strong>of</strong> those <strong>of</strong> Chartres and Blois <strong>the</strong> later shew<br />

influence <strong>of</strong> Tours. Vindocino Castro, Udon Caosto, or Vedome Castr.<br />

An obole, thought to indicate a monetary convention between <strong>the</strong> Count<br />

<strong>of</strong> V. and <strong>the</strong> Vicomte de Chateaudun in <strong>the</strong> I3th or i4th c., reads on<br />

obv. Idvni Castr., and on rev. Vidodnensis. The alliance was probably<br />

<strong>of</strong> some duration, as <strong>the</strong> crescent <strong>of</strong> C. appears on many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ano\iymous<br />

coins <strong>of</strong> V.<br />

Venice, possibly <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> numerous (twentyfour)<br />

varieties <strong>of</strong> danaro published by our valued and erudite correspondent<br />

Count Nicolo Papadopoli (whose numismatic labours are so widely<br />

known), and issued more or less under imperial authority between <strong>the</strong> 9th<br />

and 1 2th c., and from <strong>the</strong> latter date till <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>the</strong><br />

seat <strong>of</strong> an autonomous mint. Pieces in all metals were struck here in<br />

1848, and it was an occasional mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lombardo-Venetian kingdom.<br />

Venrade, Brabant, a mint belonging to <strong>the</strong> Heeren <strong>of</strong> Kessel. Sch.,<br />

Cat. ix. 384.<br />

Venray, 21 m. N. <strong>of</strong> Ruremonde, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Gueldres<br />

and Juliers, I5th c. A double groot <strong>of</strong> Raynald IV., Duke <strong>of</strong> Gueldres,<br />

1402-23, was struck here. It was for some time an active mint.<br />

Ventimiglia, Sardinian States, a seigniorial fief. Gio. Requesco,<br />

Count, 1725.<br />

Vercelli, a seat <strong>of</strong> autonomous coinage, i3th c.,<br />

under imperial<br />

sanction, and a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Savoy, 1 6th- 1 7th c. Vcr., or V.<br />

Verdun, France, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Meuse, a somewhat prominent Merovingian<br />

mint, and subsequently one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> emperors from Louis le Ddbonnaire to
