but originally <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> government <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Munich branch. It seems<br />

to have been a mint from <strong>the</strong> I5th c.,<br />

and to have produced bracteates<br />

and pfennings, and subsequently larger pieces. The m.m. was a monk's<br />

bust in allusion to <strong>the</strong> name. But <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Bavaria struck money at<br />

several o<strong>the</strong>r places, ei<strong>the</strong>r independently or in alliance with <strong>the</strong>ir neighbours.<br />

The Counts <strong>of</strong> Fiirstenberg employed this place <strong>of</strong> coinage,<br />

having apparently none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own.<br />

Munkdco, a Transylvanian mint under <strong>the</strong> Waiwode Franz II.<br />

Minister, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishops, as well as <strong>the</strong> civic<br />

mint, during a long series <strong>of</strong> years. The copper was probably early ;<br />

we<br />

have a piece <strong>of</strong> 3 pfenningen, 1602. The thaler <strong>of</strong> 1661, struck after <strong>the</strong><br />

recovery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town by <strong>the</strong> bishop, is scarce, as is <strong>the</strong> florin <strong>of</strong> 1694 with<br />

<strong>the</strong> bishop's title as Seigneur <strong>of</strong> Borculo.<br />

Munsterberg-Oels, Prussia, a seigniorial mint in <strong>the</strong> I7th c.<br />

Munsterbilsen, Limburgh, an abbatial mint in <strong>the</strong> Middle Ages, with<br />

upright figures holding a crucifix and a book, and <strong>the</strong> legend Scti<br />

Amevr.<br />

Mifrato, a Corsican mint, 1763-64.<br />

Murbach and Lure (or Ludre], France, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Saone, <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong><br />

a small silver abbatial coin with S. Leod. Egarivs and St. Ludger seated<br />

on obv., and on rev. Moneta Nova Mvr. et Lvdr. 1624. Probably two<br />

kreutzer.<br />

Musocco, Sardinian States, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Marchese di Vigevano Trivulzio<br />

(1487-1523). The privilege <strong>of</strong> coining money was confirmed by<br />

Louis XII. <strong>of</strong> France, and <strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong> a marshal was conferred on him<br />

by that prince. The St. George type was used here on some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

grossi and <strong>the</strong>y also bear F. Mare., or Marescallvs Fran.<br />

Musso, <strong>the</strong> supposed place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a quatlrino <strong>of</strong> Gio. Giacomo<br />

de' Medici, Count <strong>of</strong> Musso, 1528-32, with lo. lac. D. Med.<br />

M. Musi.<br />

Mytilene, a mediaeval seigniorial mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gattilusio family, a<br />

branch or scion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Palaeologi (1355-1449). There is a copper coin<br />

with Meteli. on rev., and qvattro B. for value. The tornese and a type <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> agnello were current here.<br />

Nagybanya, Transylvania, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kings <strong>of</strong> Hungary (Emperors<br />

<strong>of</strong> Germany) and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Princes <strong>of</strong> Transylvania, I7th c. There is a<br />

doppelthaler <strong>of</strong> Matthias II. struck here.<br />

Namur, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Luxemburgh, I4th c., and <strong>the</strong> place<br />

<strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> convention-money, or Moneta Sociorum, 1342-45,<br />

between <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> L. and <strong>of</strong> Bar and <strong>the</strong> Bp. <strong>of</strong> Liege. Also a mint<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> independent Counts <strong>of</strong> Namur. Nam-uric.<br />

Nancy, an ordinary mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Lorraine after its acquisition
