well-executed series, and comprises pieces both in gold and<br />

silver, some square, <strong>of</strong> striking boldness and beauty <strong>of</strong> workmanship.<br />

Attention may be drawn to a gold ducat <strong>of</strong> 1654 with a rosebush and <strong>the</strong><br />

motto Alles mit Gott Vnd Derzeit, in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Sophia, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n prelate. Money <strong>of</strong> necessity appeared in 1593, 1620-24, and<br />

1731-32.<br />

c. The deniers recall <strong>the</strong> legend that <strong>the</strong> place was founded by Julius<br />

Caesar ; <strong>the</strong>y are mostly anonymous. Sacrum Ccesaris, Dominus Ccesar,<br />

etc. Etienne II., 1037-47, placed his name on <strong>the</strong> money StepJianvs<br />

Come.<br />

San Gervasio, Sardinian States, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Savoy,<br />

1448-53.<br />

San Giorgio, a seigniorial seat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Milano family, Marquises <strong>of</strong> San<br />

Giorgio. Giacomo IV. struck a tallero <strong>of</strong> silver, engraved by Roettier,<br />

with his titles, etc., but whe<strong>the</strong>r here or not is uncertain.<br />

San Marino, <strong>the</strong> ostensible place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> pieces <strong>of</strong> 10 and 5<br />

centesimi, 1864, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>re are varieties. But <strong>the</strong>se were actually<br />

struck at Milan.<br />

San Martina dell' Argine, a fief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gonzage, Princes <strong>of</strong> Bozzolo<br />

San Severino, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> papal mints during <strong>the</strong> revolutionary period,<br />

1797. There are <strong>the</strong> 5, i\, i, and ^ baiocchi struck here by Pius VI.,<br />

and a quattrino.<br />

Santa Fiora, a palatine fief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Aldebrandischi, I3th c.<br />

Santa Maria di Castello, an unknown mint, to which <strong>the</strong>re is an early<br />

reference, according to M. Blanchet, mentioning " Moneta Sanctae Mariae<br />

de floreni Castellani."<br />

Santarem, Estremadura, a temporary mint <strong>of</strong> Antonio, Prior <strong>of</strong> Crato,<br />

who, after <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Henry <strong>the</strong> Cardinal, King <strong>of</strong> Portugal, in 1580,<br />

asserted a title to <strong>the</strong> crown. He struck here a copper ceitil, and i, 2,<br />

and 4 reales in silver.<br />
