DENOMINATIONS<br />

The items marked * have been taken from Mr. Peter Whelan's Numismatic<br />

Dictionary (1856), as <strong>the</strong>y stand, <strong>the</strong> writer not having met with <strong>the</strong>m. He<br />

regards many as very doubtful, and o<strong>the</strong>rs are almost certainly incorrect ;<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

latter category we have, as a rule, rejected.<br />

Abbaze, a special silver currency struck by Russia for Georgia, consisting<br />

<strong>of</strong> 5, i, and 2 abb. i8th c.<br />

*Abra, Polish silver, value is.<br />

Achtentwintig, a silver coin worth 28 stivers. There is also <strong>the</strong> half.<br />

7th c. W. Friesland, Emden, etc. There is an Italian imitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Emden type. See Sch. v. 582.<br />

Achtstuiverstuk, a piece <strong>of</strong> 8 stivers. i6th c. Brabant. There is<br />

also <strong>the</strong> tienstuiverstuk or 10 stivers, etc.<br />

Achtsehner. See Zeyner.<br />

Affonsim or grosso affonsim, <strong>the</strong> 4-dinheiro piece <strong>of</strong> Alfonso V. <strong>of</strong><br />

Portugal, 1438-81. There is <strong>the</strong> half.<br />

Agnel. See Mouton and Lam.<br />

Albertin, a silver coin so called from Albert, Archduke <strong>of</strong> Austria,<br />

Governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands, in conjunction with his consort Isabella.<br />

The busts are ei<strong>the</strong>r accollated or vis-a-vis. There is <strong>the</strong> double.<br />

Albertin, a gold coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same princes and type, with <strong>the</strong> two<br />

busts facing each o<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> Spanish model.<br />

Albulo da S. Pietro, a billon coin <strong>of</strong> Lucca under republican rule, <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Ofto type. The rev. has a full-length figure <strong>of</strong> St. Peter with <strong>the</strong><br />

keys.<br />

Albus, i.q., blanque, blanc, bianco, bianco, witpenning, a billon or plated<br />

coin, current in Germany and <strong>the</strong> Low Countries from <strong>the</strong> I5th A c.<br />

mannheimer gulden <strong>of</strong> 1608, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> half, is described as<br />

being worth 26 albus. Apiece <strong>of</strong> two albus <strong>of</strong> Orange-Nassau, 1684, is<br />

cited by Schulman, Cat. v., No. 494. Comp. Raderalbus. The city <strong>of</strong><br />

Cologne struck pieces <strong>of</strong> 4 and 8 albus.<br />

Alfonsino, a name by which <strong>the</strong> gold florin <strong>of</strong> Alfonso I., King <strong>of</strong><br />

Arragon, Sicily, and Naples (1433-58), is supposed to have been known or<br />

recognised.<br />

Alfonso, <strong>the</strong> gold Spanish piece <strong>of</strong> 25 peseta struck under Alfonso<br />

XII., 1871, etc.<br />
