1 6th- 1 8th c. Circa 1510-<br />

circd 1670. There are bracteates and deniers with Brene or Bwenen,<br />

and later pieces <strong>of</strong> 3 pfennigen with B.<br />

Bor<strong>the</strong>im, near Reckheim, Belgium, a supposed mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sombreffe<br />

family, Seigneurs <strong>of</strong> Reckheim, I4th-i5th c. Moneta. Nova. DC.<br />

Bouillon, Basse-Lorraine, a mint <strong>of</strong> Godefroi IV., Duke <strong>of</strong> B.-L.,<br />

1043-48. Some at least <strong>of</strong> his deniers bear <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> his consort<br />

Beatrix. Associated with this town and duchy<br />

is <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> famous<br />

Godefroi de Bouillon, to whom coins have been attributed in <strong>the</strong> Basse-<br />

Lorraine series. Apparently a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> See <strong>of</strong> Liege in <strong>the</strong> i6th-<br />

I7th c. See Cat. Schulman, vii. Nos. 552-55 and Cat.<br />

Nos. 207-25, 388, 390. It is doubtful whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Dues de Bouillon<br />

struck money here. The possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chateau was subject to many<br />

changes. The duchy itself and all <strong>the</strong> proprietary rights have long been<br />

absorbed in <strong>the</strong> grand -duchy <strong>of</strong> Luxemburgh. From 1792 to 1816<br />

Philippe d'Auvergne, Captain R.N., bore <strong>the</strong> title, and in 1815 struck a<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> 5 francs with Philippe D'Attvergne Due Souverain de Botiillon,<br />

and his portrait. On <strong>the</strong> edge is inscribed Domine Salvvin Fac<br />

Dvcem.<br />

Boulogne, a place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carlovingian Princes down to<br />

Lothaire, and a seigniorial mint <strong>of</strong> a branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Flanders,<br />

i ith-i3th The c. domain changed hands two or three times, passing into<br />

<strong>the</strong> families <strong>of</strong> Dammartin and Auvergne. Besides this place <strong>of</strong> coinage<br />

<strong>the</strong> Counts had a mint at Lens-en-Artois, to which are referred deniers <strong>of</strong><br />

Eustache I.<br />

(1046-49) and Eustache II. (1049-95) with Lesni Castel, or<br />

Lesnensis. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> B. preserved his title after his accession<br />

to <strong>the</strong> throne <strong>of</strong> Portugal as Alfonso III. in 1248. Urbs. Bolonie, Bolungne,<br />

Boninge, etc. Deniers only.<br />

Bourges, a mint <strong>of</strong> Charles le Chauve, 1840-75, <strong>of</strong> whom <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />

denier with Bitvricas on rev., and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vicomtes de B. down to not,<br />

when <strong>the</strong> fief was sold to <strong>the</strong> Crown for 60,000 sols d'or. The Vicomtes<br />

seem to have struck no money in <strong>the</strong>ir own name, but to have issued <strong>the</strong><br />

Carlovingian types in that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King.<br />
