Agen or Auch, a mint <strong>of</strong> Edward I. <strong>of</strong> England as Duke <strong>of</strong> Aquitaine,<br />

c. 1 1 86 ; <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops <strong>of</strong> A., 9th-i3th c. and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Fezenzac<br />

(nth c.), whose capital was here. Deniers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter read on rev.<br />

Agimont, near Givet, Ardennes, a seigniorial mint <strong>of</strong> Jean de Looz,<br />

1280-1310, known from an esterlin with loh. Dns. De Agimot, and (on<br />

rev.) Moneta Agimot.<br />

Ahlen, Prussian Westphalia, a place to which <strong>the</strong> Bishop <strong>of</strong> Munster<br />

accorded a license to coin copper money in 1597 <strong>the</strong> pieces bear a<br />

winged eel, crowned.<br />

Aire-sur-la-Lys, Pas de Calais, near St. Omer, formerly part <strong>of</strong><br />

Flanders, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> places which struck <strong>the</strong> communal niailles, and<br />

perhaps a mint <strong>of</strong> Baudouin IX., Count <strong>of</strong> Flanders, 1 194-1206. Ariensis<br />

with a lion passant, or Aria. The place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> money <strong>of</strong> necessity<br />

during <strong>the</strong> sieges by <strong>the</strong> French and Spaniards in 1641 under <strong>the</strong> Material<br />

de Meilleray, and by <strong>the</strong> Allies in 1710. Of <strong>the</strong> former <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />

silver livre.<br />

Aix-en-Provence, Bouches du Rhone, a Carlovingian mint (Aguis<br />

urbs\ one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Provence mentioned in a charter <strong>of</strong> 1146, and<br />

an occasional place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bourbon Kings <strong>of</strong> France. A piece<br />

<strong>of</strong> 12 sols, 1776, has <strong>the</strong> mark & for this place.<br />

Aix-la-Chapelle, Aachen or Agen (Aquis Grant, Aquensis, Aqvs),<br />

a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carlovingian dynasty, subsequently <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hohenstaufen<br />

line. Here in 1422 was struck a gros, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest genuine existing<br />

pieces with a date. At a later period was it <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> a long<br />

series <strong>of</strong> civic or urban money in silver and copper. There is also siegemoney,<br />

struck here in 1597 and 1670.<br />

Aix-lcs-Bains, Savoy, a Savoyard mint, I4th-i5th c.<br />

Aixe, near Limoges, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a special coinage <strong>of</strong> Gui V., Viscount<br />

<strong>of</strong> Limoges (1199-1230), who struck barbarins in his chateau <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

Alba, in <strong>the</strong> Abruzzi, a seat <strong>of</strong> a small coinage in <strong>the</strong> i6th c.<br />

Alba Julia, a Transylvanian mint under <strong>the</strong> independent waiwodes.<br />

A.I.<br />

Alba Regia, or Agria, an early Hanoverian mint.<br />

Albi or Alby, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Tarn, 42 m. N.E. <strong>of</strong> Toulouse, a mint, <strong>of</strong> which<br />

<strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>its appear to have been shared from an early period between<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bishop and <strong>the</strong> Count <strong>of</strong> T. In 1037 <strong>the</strong> latter is found bestowing<br />

his quota on his bride as a dowry. In 1278 <strong>the</strong> mint-master had liberty<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Crown to strike petits tournois and oboles tournois in consideration<br />

<strong>of</strong> paying 30 livres tournois to <strong>the</strong> King and <strong>the</strong> same to <strong>the</strong> See for<br />

each striking. Albieci. The money bearing Albicnsis and N. Bonafos<br />

was struck in and after 1248 at <strong>the</strong> Chateau Neuf de Bonafos, <strong>the</strong> residence<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sicard d'Alaman, Minister <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n Count. The Count, <strong>the</strong> Bishop,<br />

and Sicard divided <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>its.<br />

Alessandria, Piedmont, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a republican coinage, I2th-i4th<br />

c. There is a copper sesino with <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> St. Peter, and on rev.<br />

Alexandria. In 1746 a piece <strong>of</strong> 10 soldi in bronze or copper was struck<br />

during <strong>the</strong> blockade by <strong>the</strong> Marechal de Maillebois.<br />

Alkmaar, N. Holland, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> tin and lead money,<br />

struck during <strong>the</strong> siege by <strong>the</strong> Spaniards in 1573.<br />

Almeloo, Overijssel, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seigneur, Evert van Hekeren, i5th c.
