diocese, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> provincial Government during <strong>the</strong> republican period.<br />

The same Merovingian moneyer, Adalbertus, who worked at Durstede<br />

and elsewhere, has his name on coins belonging to this place. During<br />

<strong>the</strong> 1 8th c. Utrecht was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mints for <strong>the</strong> Batavian Republic and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dutch Indies. In 1812-13, Napoleon<br />

I. struck pieces <strong>of</strong> 20 francs,<br />

i<br />

fr.,<br />

and \<br />

fr. ;<br />

at that time Holland still formed part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> French Empire.<br />

Utrecht is <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present kingdom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands. There<br />

is a curious denarius <strong>of</strong> Otto van Gueldres (i3th c.), Bishop <strong>of</strong> U., as<br />

Advocate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> See, and ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Bishop Willem van Gueldres, with <strong>the</strong><br />

bust <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishop on rev. and that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor Henry IV. (1056-<br />

1<br />

106) on obv. A denier <strong>of</strong> Willem van Briig, 1054-76, presents on <strong>the</strong> rev.<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest views <strong>of</strong> a city on a mediaeval coin. There is a small<br />

silver piece <strong>of</strong> PVederic <strong>of</strong> Baden, with Mon. Epi. Traicc. and <strong>the</strong><br />

/<br />

date<br />

1498. Schulman, Cat. v. 131, cites an obole <strong>of</strong> an early bishop <strong>of</strong> U.<br />

struck in West Friesland. A botdrager or double groot <strong>of</strong> John <strong>of</strong><br />

Virenburg, Bp., 1364-71, is termed Moneta de Zalandia. We may notice<br />

a rare leeuendaalder <strong>of</strong> 1578 with <strong>the</strong> shield supported by two lions, <strong>the</strong><br />

original type <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> denomination, and between 1519 and 1606 several<br />

unusual varieties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> daalder and \ daalder, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rose-noble and<br />

\, some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former with <strong>the</strong> portrait <strong>of</strong> William <strong>the</strong> Silent ;<br />

also a piefort<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gold rijder <strong>of</strong> 1620 differing from <strong>the</strong> current issue, and weighing<br />

19 gr., and varieties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> double ducat in gold, 1683, 1706, 1742, etc.<br />

Use's. Dept. <strong>of</strong> Card, a seat <strong>of</strong> Carlovingian, if not <strong>of</strong> Merovingian, coinage,<br />

and opened as an episcopal-capitular mint in <strong>the</strong> gth c. It<br />

appears<br />

that in <strong>the</strong> I2th (1145) <strong>the</strong> chapter alienated its share in part to <strong>the</strong><br />

Seigneur d'Uzes. There is an obole <strong>of</strong> Bishop Raymond III., 1208-12,<br />

with Use on rev.<br />

Valence and Die, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Drome, two episcopal mints from 1157 to<br />

1456, when <strong>the</strong> seigniorial rights were ceded to <strong>the</strong> Crown. Valence was<br />

united to Die in 1276. Gros, \ gros, carlins, and deniers. The money<br />

<strong>of</strong> Die, before <strong>the</strong> union <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dioceses, reads Civitas Diensis ; that <strong>of</strong><br />

Amede'e II. <strong>of</strong> Saluzzo, 1383-90, has A. De : Saluc. Administrator<br />

Ecclesiar. &* Comitat. D. Valenc. E. Dn.<br />

Valencia, a Visigothic mint, and one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early Kings <strong>of</strong> Arragon,<br />

1<br />

3th c. Valencie Maioricarvm. And <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kings <strong>of</strong> Spain. V.<br />

Valenciennes, an occasional mint <strong>of</strong> Louis le Debonnaire, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Emperors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> West (i4th c.). See Cat. Robert, 1886, Nos. 31, 32. Two<br />

variant thalers <strong>of</strong> Louis <strong>of</strong> Bavaria (1314-47) were struck here. Also <strong>the</strong><br />

place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Hainault and <strong>of</strong> Flanders, and <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Burgundy. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> money <strong>of</strong> Margaret <strong>of</strong> Constantinople<br />

(1244-80), and Jean d'Avesnes (1280-1304) <strong>of</strong> Hainault, belongs here.<br />

Under <strong>the</strong> later Counts it became an important mint, and from <strong>the</strong> time<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gtiillaume III., 1356-89, <strong>the</strong> sole one. In 1793 a piece <strong>of</strong> 3 livres in<br />

bell-metal was struck during <strong>the</strong> siege <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town by <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong><br />

York.<br />

Valetta, <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> St. John <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem after <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

by Charles V. in 1530 with <strong>the</strong> Island <strong>of</strong> Malta, and down to<br />

<strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> i8th c. There is a rare silver ingot struck as money <strong>of</strong><br />

necessity during <strong>the</strong> siege <strong>of</strong> 1799.<br />

Valladolid, a place which appears under <strong>the</strong> initial V. on certain coins<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Urgel, I3th c.,<br />

with Urgellensis, Comes Urgelli, etc. At<br />

a somewhat later period <strong>the</strong> bishops appear to have had some interest in<br />

<strong>the</strong> coinage, on which occurs a crozier. Low values only.
