ix- 373-75- There are various types <strong>of</strong> groot and denier noir, or swaart,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jan van Wesemael, Arnoud van Orije, etc.<br />

Ruremonde, or Roremonde, 21 m. from Venray, Gueldres, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mints <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Gueldres, I4th-I5th c., and <strong>of</strong> Philip II. <strong>of</strong> Spain.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former series struck here and at Venrade are curious as<br />

demonstrating <strong>the</strong> armorial differences between damoiseaux or minors<br />

and those <strong>of</strong> full age.<br />

Russon, prov. <strong>of</strong> Limburg, Belgium, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heeren or seigneurs<br />

<strong>of</strong> that place, I4th-i5th c. A gros tournois <strong>of</strong> Jean de Louvain has<br />

Moneta. Rv<strong>the</strong>s\ Sch., ix. 376.<br />

Saalfeld, Saxe-Meiningen, an abbatial mint down to 1350, when <strong>the</strong><br />

abbot ceded <strong>the</strong> right to <strong>the</strong> town. There is a large bracteate with Scs.<br />

Petrvs Apostolvs in. Salfelt. It was also an early place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Counts <strong>of</strong> Schwarzburg, and received in 1448 from <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Saxony<br />

a concession for <strong>the</strong> lower values. The place does not appear to have<br />

produced any coinage <strong>of</strong> importance. A heller <strong>of</strong> 1726 has T.E. in a<br />

monogram under a ducal crown.<br />

Sabbionetta, Lombardy, in <strong>the</strong> Milanese territory, formerly an independent<br />

duchy in <strong>the</strong> Gonzaga family (1559-1671), and a seat <strong>of</strong> coinage.<br />

The Dukes also struck money at Bozzolo.<br />

Sagodoura, Moldavia, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> coinage from 1771 to 1774 <strong>of</strong> pieces<br />

<strong>of</strong> 5 kopecks and 3 dengi in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>rine II.<br />

Sahagun, Ldon, an ancient abbatial establishment, to which Queen<br />

Uraca and Alfonso VII. successively (1116-19) conceded <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong><br />

coinage.<br />

Saint-Aignan, Touraine, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sires de Donzy. Coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Blois type. Sancti Ainiano.<br />

Saint-Andre, formerly Straeten, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a seigniorial coinage in<br />

Saint-Andre de Villeneu-ve-Lez-A'vignons, a place <strong>of</strong> coinage under<br />

Charles VI. <strong>of</strong> France (ord. <strong>of</strong> Sept. 1 1, 1389). Orig. m.m. a point under<br />

2oth letter and from 1540, R. The mint was transferred to Orleans late<br />

in <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Louis XIV.<br />

Saint- Ba-von, near Ghent, a mint <strong>of</strong> Louis de Creepy, Count <strong>of</strong><br />

Flanders, 1312-46, if not <strong>of</strong> Margaret <strong>of</strong> Constantinople, 1244-80.<br />

Setint-Bertin, Flanders, a mint <strong>of</strong> Charles le Bon, Count <strong>of</strong> Flanders,<br />

1119-27.<br />

Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, a mint <strong>of</strong> Charles de Blois, about 1314, during<br />

his contest for <strong>the</strong> duchy.<br />

Saint-Denis, France, a mint <strong>of</strong> Charles le Chauve.<br />

Saint-Die, Vosges, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest places <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> duchy<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lorraine, and probably at a prior period an abbatial mint, whence<br />

came <strong>the</strong> pieces with a crozier and a book, and <strong>the</strong> reading Deodatus, or<br />

Deodatus Usus. Some very barbarous pieces in bad state are described<br />

in Cat. Robert, 1886, Nos. 1663-66. The rulers <strong>of</strong> L. used this mint from<br />

<strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Gerard d'Alsace (1048-70). Sa. in. Diei.<br />

Saint-Gall, Switzerland, an abbatial mint from 947 for pieces <strong>of</strong> bracteate<br />

fabric, and an urban one from 1415. The addition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gold<br />

collar to <strong>the</strong> rampant bear was given by Frederic III. in 1475. There<br />

are uniface pieces in gold and silver with <strong>the</strong> civic arms. The plappart<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1424 is <strong>the</strong> first dated Swiss coin at present known. There is a very<br />

early and rare dicken <strong>of</strong> 1505 with Moneta Nova Sancti Galli, and an-
