Yennc, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Savoy, I4th c.<br />

Ypres (Ipra, or Ipre), <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> Philippe d'Alsace, Gui de Dampierre,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>rs, Counts <strong>of</strong> Flanders after <strong>the</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong> Artois. It<br />

appears<br />

that certain English nobles were struck in this locality, if not in <strong>the</strong> town<br />

itself, by a concession granted to Edward III. by <strong>the</strong> towns <strong>of</strong> Ghent,<br />

Bruges, and Ypres in 1345. The coin is said to have originated in a<br />

victory by Edward over <strong>the</strong> French in 1340 <strong>of</strong>FSluijs.<br />

Yves, Namur, a mint <strong>of</strong> Gaucher, Count <strong>of</strong> Porcien (1312-22).<br />

Zacatccas, Mexico, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principal colonial mints <strong>of</strong> Spain in<br />

former times. It was still<br />

employed under <strong>the</strong> Spanish Bourbons in<br />

1821, and is said to be still in operation.<br />

Zamosc, Poland, <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> a silver coin <strong>of</strong> 2 zlote", struck in 1813,<br />

as money <strong>of</strong> necessity.<br />

Zantc, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> places named on <strong>the</strong> Venetian copper gazzctte struck<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Ionian Isles under Venetian rule.<br />

Zara, Dalmatia, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> siege-pieces in<br />

silver, <strong>the</strong> double-headed eagle crowned, between Zara, 1813, and on<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> value. There are pieces <strong>of</strong> 18 fr. 40 c., 9 fr. 20 c., and 4 fr.<br />

60 c., besides a countermarked baiocco <strong>of</strong> Pius VI. The Venetian money<br />

for Zara may have been struck here or at Venice itself.<br />

Zator, Galicia, formerly an independent duchy, for which we have a<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> 30 kreutzer <strong>of</strong> Maria Theresa <strong>of</strong> 1776, with Archid. Avs. Dvx<br />

Os-w. Zat.<br />

Zicgcnhain, Hesse, <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local seigneurs in <strong>the</strong> I3th c., and<br />

subsequently <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Landgraves <strong>of</strong> Hesse. CygcnWga.<br />

Ziericzcc, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> siege-money in tin for 20, 15, and 10<br />

stuivers, and for i<br />

stuiver, in 1575-76 during <strong>the</strong> Spanish siege.<br />

Z<strong>of</strong>ingen, Switzerland, canton <strong>of</strong> Aargau, a place <strong>of</strong> independent cantonal<br />

coinage by a concession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor Frederic II. in 1239.<br />

There are bracteates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Froburg, I3th-I4th c., with Z O;<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r money down to <strong>the</strong> i8th c.<br />

Zolder, Limburg, <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> Jan van Elteren, Seigneur <strong>of</strong> Zolder,<br />

Zonhoven, Vogelshanck, and Houthalen, and <strong>of</strong> his successor Henri van<br />

Bastogne, I4th c. The coins are billon, imitated from <strong>the</strong> Liege type,<br />

and read lohs. De Eltcren. Dns. De. Voge., or Moneta. Nova. Svlrens.<br />

Zonhovcn, Limburg, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archbp. <strong>of</strong> Cologne,<br />

Engelbert de la Marck, and <strong>of</strong> Henri de Bastogne, with Engelb. D. Mar.<br />

Dns. Son., and Her. DC. Bast. Dns. Sonvc. There are only deniers in<br />

billon.<br />

Ziig, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> bracteates <strong>of</strong> late date with <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Frauenmiinster <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> striking money here, and <strong>the</strong>re are bracteates<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1<br />

3th- 1 4th c. with a church, <strong>the</strong> bust <strong>of</strong> St. Felix, that<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Abbess, etc. The abbey ceded <strong>the</strong> right to <strong>the</strong> city in 1514.<br />

There are some interesting types <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> thaler (including those with<br />

<strong>the</strong> three martyrs carrying <strong>the</strong>ir heads, and with a view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city)<br />

and also <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gold currency. Pieces prior to <strong>the</strong> i8th c. are scarce.<br />

The dicken or \ thaler was imitated by <strong>the</strong> engraver <strong>of</strong> a double groat <strong>of</strong>
