Catalogue <strong>of</strong> <strong>European</strong> Mints 179<br />

Daventer. Zvrich, Zv. Reip. Tigvrina or Thvricensis, Moneta Tigurina.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> rarer products <strong>of</strong> this mint may be cited a gold coin struck<br />

in <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Charles le Gros, with Mon. Nova Av. Thvricesis on obv.,<br />

and on rev. Civitas Imperial; a dicken <strong>of</strong> 1504, a thaler <strong>of</strong> 1512, <strong>of</strong> which<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are varieties, and o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> 1526, 1558, and 3-thaler klippe <strong>of</strong> 1559.<br />

All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se belong to <strong>the</strong> imperial epoch. The thaler and ^ thaler <strong>of</strong><br />

1773 are also said to be uncommon, especially <strong>the</strong> latter.<br />

Zutphen, Gelderland, on <strong>the</strong> Yssel, <strong>the</strong> probable place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a<br />

briquet <strong>of</strong> Charles le Temeraire, Duke <strong>of</strong> Burgundy, 1475, having as a<br />

mint-mark a lion running to left. Sch., xv. 200. O<strong>the</strong>r pieces struck here<br />

in billon and copper occur. It was an occasional mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spanish<br />

rulers. During <strong>the</strong> siege by <strong>the</strong> Spaniards in 1586 <strong>the</strong> town issued 3<br />

stuivers or sols in lead and copper.<br />

Zweibriiggen, Bavaria, formerly in <strong>the</strong> Palatinate, apparently <strong>the</strong><br />

source <strong>of</strong> a thaler <strong>of</strong> 1623, with <strong>the</strong> titles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Juliers, CleVes,<br />

Berg, Mark, Ravensperg, and Ravenstein.<br />

Zwolle, a mint at which convention-money was struck in <strong>the</strong> i6th c.,<br />

prior to 1576, in pursuance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> treaty between it, Campen, and Daventer.<br />

Also an imperial and civic mint in <strong>the</strong> i6th and I7th c. A grosch <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> German type was struck here in 1601. A silver coin <strong>of</strong> Zwolle,<br />

apparently money <strong>of</strong> necessity, struck on a square flan, bears on obv.<br />

Zwollae 96 [1596], and on rev. a shield with <strong>the</strong> legend Devs. Refvgivm<br />

Nostrum.
