The want <strong>of</strong> small denominations seems to have been<br />

felt, even with <strong>the</strong> possibility that <strong>the</strong> colonial money was<br />

current in France, or that a certain residuum was left <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> large republican output, and in 1840 appeared a decime<br />

with <strong>the</strong> portrait and title <strong>of</strong> Louis Philippe I., and on<br />

reverse Refonte Des Monnaies De Cuivre.<br />

<strong>of</strong> this movement we hear no more.<br />

The features <strong>of</strong> interest associated with Napoleon III.<br />

are restricted to his ra<strong>the</strong>r scarce coinage as President, 1852,<br />

particularly <strong>the</strong> pattern 5 francs, which Barre first submitted,<br />

<strong>the</strong> settlement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bronze currency on a convenient basis,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> historical anticlimax signified by <strong>the</strong> resort to <strong>the</strong><br />

Brussels mint for <strong>the</strong> 5 francs <strong>of</strong> 1870. The 5 and 10<br />

francs in gold were first introduced in this reign, and <strong>the</strong><br />

former was doubtless suggested by <strong>the</strong> American dollar, <strong>of</strong><br />

which it even followed <strong>the</strong> two types or modules. The<br />

partizans <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bonaparte family thought fit in 1874 to<br />

issue a small coinage in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Napoleon IV., <strong>the</strong><br />

colourless young man, who perished in Africa in 1879.<br />

We have at present to retrace our steps a little to consider<br />

a branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> question to which recent allusion has<br />

been made. Toward <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seventeenth century, when<br />

we begin to lose sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Franco -Italian and Franco -<br />

Spanish money, noticed elsewhere, we become cognisant <strong>of</strong><br />

a third class or group <strong>of</strong> productions, demonstrating <strong>the</strong><br />

anxiety <strong>of</strong> France or its rulers to find an outlet for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

energy in o<strong>the</strong>r quarters and in a different field. About<br />
