Catalogue <strong>of</strong> <strong>European</strong> Mints 177<br />

Wismar, Mecklenburgh-Schwerin, a seat <strong>of</strong> coinage in all metals from<br />

<strong>the</strong> i/thc. but in recent times ; copper only seems to have been struck<br />

<strong>the</strong>re. It was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mints in <strong>the</strong> 1<br />

7th- 8th 1 c. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> undivided duchy<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mecklenburgh. Moneta. Wismar. and on rev. Civitas. Magnop. The<br />

mint seems to have produced nothing after 1854. There is a rare piece<br />

representing a thaler and a half, without date, but about 1680, with a threequarter<br />

figure <strong>of</strong> St. Laurence, holding <strong>the</strong> gridiron, a shield <strong>of</strong> arms in<br />

front <strong>of</strong> him, and <strong>the</strong> legend Firma Est in Domin .'. Spes . Et Fid-vcia<br />

Nostra ,<br />

and on <strong>the</strong> rev. <strong>the</strong> outer circle has a legend : Wismariam<br />

A Cvnctis Protege Christe Malts.'. The inner circle, embracing a<br />

quartered shield, reads Devs. Dat. Cvi. Vvlt. This coin was obligingly<br />

lent to us, with many o<strong>the</strong>rs, by Messrs. Spink and Son <strong>of</strong> London.<br />

Comp. Schulman, Cat. xx. 1208. A gold ducat <strong>of</strong> Wismar, 1743, occurred<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Reinmann sale, 1891, No. 867. In 1715, during <strong>the</strong> siege by <strong>the</strong><br />

allied Russians, Danes, Saxons, and Hanoverians, <strong>the</strong> town struck money<br />

<strong>of</strong> necessity for I, 4, 8, and 16 schillings.<br />

Wissembiirg, Alsace, an abbatial mint from 1275, and a municipal one<br />

under imperial sanction 1<br />

5th- 1 7th c. The abbatial money bears Widenfire<br />

[? <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> an abbot Wilfrid], <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Weissenbvrg. Am.<br />

Rhei. This is <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a very early and rare denier,<br />

described in Cat. Robert, 1886, No. 1791. Comp. also Nos. 1978,<br />

1988.<br />

Wittenberg, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors <strong>of</strong> Saxony and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town, I3thi6th<br />

c. Shield with two swords and W.<br />

Woerden, Holland, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a square piece <strong>of</strong> 4 stuivers<br />

in lead, struck during <strong>the</strong> siege by <strong>the</strong> Spaniards in 1575.<br />

Woerth-am-Sauer, Alsace, a mint <strong>of</strong> Lichtenberg, 1587-1632.<br />

Wolfenbiittel, Brunswick, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Brunswick,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a tolerably long series <strong>of</strong> coins. Money <strong>of</strong><br />

necessity was struck here in 1627 by <strong>the</strong> commandant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fortress.<br />

Wohlau or Wohlau, Silesia, <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> pfennigen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I4th c.<br />

with a bull's head and IV. V. for Wulavia; <strong>the</strong>re were pieces <strong>of</strong> 24<br />

kreutzer during <strong>the</strong> Thirty Years' War (1621-22). It was also a mint <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Counts and Dukes <strong>of</strong> Brieg.<br />

Workum,VJ. Friesland, a seat <strong>of</strong> local coinage, I4th c.,<br />

with Wolderv.<br />

and an eagle and three fleurs-de-lis.<br />

Worms, Hesse Darmstadt, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> a denier <strong>of</strong> early<br />

fabric similar to those <strong>of</strong> Louis le Ddbonnaire <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple type, and a<br />

mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops <strong>of</strong> Worms from <strong>the</strong> gth c., as well as perhaps <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

See <strong>of</strong> Treves. The most ancient denier <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishops is one <strong>of</strong> Henry<br />

(1217-34). There is also civic or municipal money in gold and silver.<br />

repeatedly struck here.<br />
