which was thus perpetuated both here and elsewhere<br />

centuries after <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last emperor so called. The<br />

Lucchese <strong>the</strong>mselves bestowed on this pattern <strong>the</strong> sobriquet<br />

<strong>of</strong> Barbone. But, beside St. Martin, <strong>the</strong>y courted <strong>the</strong><br />

patronage <strong>of</strong> St. Paulinus, who appears on a copper piece <strong>of</strong><br />

1757, holding in one hand <strong>the</strong> Church and in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

pastoral staff or crozier. The accollated series in gold,<br />

silver, and copper, representing <strong>the</strong> sister <strong>of</strong> Napoleon and<br />

her husband, is probably well known <strong>the</strong> is<br />

; copper scarce.<br />

We have before us <strong>the</strong> 5 and 3 centesimi <strong>of</strong> Felice and<br />

Elisa, i 806, and <strong>the</strong> soldo, 1826, <strong>of</strong> Carlo Lodovico <strong>the</strong>ir son.<br />

The coinage <strong>of</strong> Genoa, unlike that <strong>of</strong> Venice or even <strong>of</strong><br />
