Catalogite <strong>of</strong> <strong>European</strong> Denominations 235<br />

Soldone, a billon coin <strong>of</strong> Venice =12 soldi. In <strong>the</strong> later issues <strong>the</strong><br />

value is marked in <strong>the</strong> exergue.<br />

Soldone, a copper coin <strong>of</strong> Mantua, i8th c. One <strong>of</strong> Charles VI.,<br />

Emperor <strong>of</strong> Germany, has on rev. Soldone di Mantova. \ 732.<br />

Solidus, originally a billon or base silver, and eventually a copper<br />

coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Teutonic Order, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Margraves <strong>of</strong> Brandenburgh as Dukes<br />

<strong>of</strong> Prussia, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kings <strong>of</strong> Poland, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early Prussian monarchs.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> 1529, described as silver, is cited by Schulman, ix. 539, and we<br />

have before us an exceedingly rare copper example dated 1 568, and<br />

struck for Lithuania or Livonia. At Metz <strong>the</strong> copper solidus was current<br />

in 1655, as well as <strong>the</strong> ^ and j, and at Dantzic, Thorn, Elbing, etc., it survived<br />

down to <strong>the</strong> last quarter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> i8th c. There is a J solidus <strong>of</strong> 1655.<br />

Sophiendukaat, a gold denomination <strong>of</strong> Johann George, Duke <strong>of</strong><br />

Saxony, 1616.<br />

Sortett-gulden, a silver coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archbishops <strong>of</strong> Mayence. They<br />

were also current in <strong>the</strong> iyth c.<br />

Sorting, copper currency <strong>of</strong> Denmark under Frederic III. (1648-70).<br />

So-vrano, a denomination struck by Francis I. <strong>of</strong> Austria in 1831 for<br />

<strong>the</strong> dukedom <strong>of</strong> Milan and Austrian Lombardy. Comp. Sovren.<br />

Sovren, and <strong>the</strong> double, a gold denomination introduced into <strong>the</strong><br />

Austrian Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands by <strong>the</strong> Emperor Francis. Comp. Sovrano.<br />

Spadin, a denomination introduced into <strong>the</strong> episcopal coinage <strong>of</strong><br />

Metz by Renaud, bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Count <strong>of</strong> Bar, bishop from 1302 to 1318,<br />

who sought to adapt his money in type and weight to that <strong>of</strong> Bar.<br />

Spadin, a silver coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Toul, I4th c.,<br />

imitated from <strong>the</strong><br />

types <strong>of</strong> Ferri IV., Duke <strong>of</strong> Lorraine.<br />

Species, a standard <strong>of</strong> currency in certain parts <strong>of</strong> Germany and in<br />

<strong>the</strong> north <strong>of</strong> Europe, apparently answering to <strong>the</strong> modern dollar <strong>of</strong> commerce.<br />

species thaler <strong>of</strong> Brunswick- Wolfenbiittel, 1783.<br />

In Denmark and Sweden <strong>the</strong> form was at first<br />

Rigsdaler - species,<br />

which was abbreviated, when it was sufficiently well understood. The<br />

weight <strong>of</strong> this type was formerly by no means uniform or trustworthy in<br />

those countries ;<br />

but <strong>the</strong> later Kings <strong>of</strong> Denmark have restored <strong>the</strong> character<br />

<strong>of</strong> this currency. Comp. Banco.<br />

Spilegroschen, a Saxon denomination for a small silver = piece a<br />

denier in size and weight, under Ernst, Albrecht, and Wilhelm, Dukes <strong>of</strong><br />

Saxony, 1464-86. Query, a sort <strong>of</strong> card-counter.<br />

Sprenger, a piece <strong>of</strong> two schellinks or \ crown in N. Holland.<br />

Ssoiuzayia, <strong>the</strong> name given to early Russian convention -money,<br />

bearing <strong>the</strong> titles <strong>of</strong> two princes.<br />

Stadtfenning, a pfenning struck for a township.<br />

Statendaalder,s\\ver crown struck for general currency in <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands<br />

during <strong>the</strong> struggle for independence, i6th c. There is <strong>the</strong><br />

moiety.<br />

Statenschelling, a coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same class for <strong>the</strong> lower value. Sch.,<br />

Stellino, a silver coin <strong>of</strong> Florence, only struck under <strong>the</strong> reigns <strong>of</strong><br />

Cosmo I., De' Medici (1537-74), to repay <strong>the</strong> loan from <strong>the</strong> Genoese.<br />

On obv. occurs Cosmvs M[edJ] R[ei] P\iublic(Z\ Floren. Dvx II., and a<br />

portrait to The r. rev. has i". Joannes Batista, and <strong>the</strong> saint seated.<br />

The name is due to a star on <strong>the</strong> obv. as a mint-mark.<br />

Stephanusdaalder, a daalder or thaler <strong>of</strong> Nimmhegen, etc., with <strong>the</strong><br />

head or figure <strong>of</strong> St. Stephen.<br />
