Hoedjeschelling, a schelling or escalin with <strong>the</strong> stadtholder's bonnet,<br />

1 7th c. Zceland, etc. See livid-penning.<br />

Hohlpfenning, a billon uniface coin <strong>of</strong> German origin, allied in fabric<br />

to <strong>the</strong> bracteate.<br />

Huitain, a copper coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> canton <strong>of</strong> Geneva, belonging to <strong>the</strong><br />

class <strong>of</strong> money <strong>of</strong> necessity, and made to pass current, 1602, for twelve<br />

instead <strong>of</strong> eight sols. The obv. reads Geneva Civitas 1602 ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> rev.<br />

Comp. Hoedjeschelling. The interest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two terms appears to lie<br />

in <strong>the</strong> circumstance that <strong>the</strong>y shew <strong>the</strong> contemporary designation for<br />

what we are wont to call <strong>the</strong> bonnet.<br />

Imperial, a gold coin <strong>of</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>rine II. <strong>of</strong> Russia = 10 roubles. There<br />

is <strong>the</strong> double. It is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> handsomest types in <strong>the</strong> Russian gold<br />

Imperial, half, a Russian gold coin <strong>of</strong> a different type = 5 roubles, 1 5<br />

kop. first struck in 1801.<br />

Imperiale, a silver coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Del Carretto family, Marquises <strong>of</strong><br />

Cortemiglia. There is one <strong>of</strong> Ottone, 1300-14, with Odonvs Marcho. de.<br />

Char. Reto. The same denomination was used by <strong>the</strong> earlier Visconti <strong>of</strong><br />

Milan, I4th c. One <strong>of</strong> Barnabo Visconti has on rev. Imperialis in three<br />

lines, <strong>the</strong> word Vicecomes being understood. The family name was<br />

originally an <strong>of</strong>ficial vicariat.<br />

India, a silver Portuguese coin ordered to be struck in 1499 on <strong>the</strong><br />

model <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Venetian marcella, weighing 60 gr., and = 33 reaes or reals.<br />

It seems to be known only from a history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> King Emmanuel<br />

by Damiao de Goes. See Fernandes, Memoria, p. 116.<br />

Irakli, special copper currency struck by Russia for Georgia.<br />

Isabella, <strong>the</strong> name, ra<strong>the</strong>r popular than <strong>of</strong>ficial, conferred on <strong>the</strong><br />

doubloon or ico-reales piece in gold struck under Isabella II.<br />

= 4 stivers, and a j jager,<br />

convention-money between <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Groningen and <strong>the</strong> Count <strong>of</strong> East<br />

Friesland in 1507. See Schulman, Cat. v. No. 681. There are early<br />

dated jagers and double jagers <strong>of</strong> Groningen from 1455 downward.
