But when we offer our prayer through
Him, we can have confidence of "getting
through."
Dr. Eugene Myers Harrison,
in one of his recent books tells again an
interesting and illustrative story as
follows: "A lad of twelve one day ap
proached one of the uniformed guards
at the gates of Buckingham Palace and
said, "I want to see my king. People
told me I wouldn't be able to get
through the gates and into the palace,
but I came anyway. I walked ten miles
to get here. Please let me get through."
But the guard roughly answered, "Do
you think this is a museum The king is
busy. Get away before I arrest
Several times the boy
pled to be per
mitted to enter and each time he was
rudely
repulsed. As the lad stood near
the gate crying, the Prince of Wales,
also about twelve years old, came out of
the palace, crossed the garden and began
to converse with the guard. Noticeing the
boy standing outside weeping, he said,
"What is the matter with that boy out
there"
When the guard told him, the
Prince ran to the sobbing boy and said,
"I understand you want to see the king.
He is my father. I am the prince. I'll
get you through the gates. Come with
The guard saluted and let the two
boys enter. A few minutes later the
king laid aside the important documents
he was reading, talked kindly to the
lad who had walked ten miles to see him,
gave him a picture as a souvenir of his
visit, and told him to go home and be a
Christian citizen, serving God and his
Jesus Christ is the Prince. He'll get us
through to God.
III. CONFIDENCE IN THE ONE BY
WHOM WE PRAY THE HOLY
SPIRIT
Our space is limited so we'll just sug
gest two passages for your study on this
idea. In Rom. 8:26-27 we read, "Like
wise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmi
ties: for we know not what we should
pray for as we ought: but the Spirit it
self maketh intercession for us with
groanings which cannot be uttered. And
he that searcheth the hearts knoweth
what is the mind of the Spirit, because
he maketh intercession for the saints ac
God."
cording to the will of And in
Ephesians 6 :18 Paul urges as a part of
the warfare against Satan to be "pray
ing always with all prayer and supplica
tion in the Spirit.
Again let me say we have every rea
son to be confident and trustful as we
pray.
Suggestions:
1. Discuss other bases for confidence
February 16, 1955
in prayer such as
(a) Your own past experiences.
(b) The experiences of others.
2. Tell of confidence in prayer by
George Muller, Praying Hyde, and oth
ers.
3. Spend some time at home in careful
re-reading
all the great answers to
prayer which you can find in the Bible.
4. Take plenty of time to pray about
and for specific things, named by your
self, and those in your group.
"Choice of Paths" Proverbs 28:13
Louise Murphy
Doubtless, as we think of this topic,
we will see before us a fork in the road,
where there may or may not be sign
posts.
Since we are concerned about
reaching our destination in the shortest
possible time, we are anxious that we
make no mistake in our choice. In this
text Proverbs 28:13 we find signposts
to direct us. One points to the way
of attempting to cover our sins with the
warning that who goes that way "shall
not
while the other points to
confession and forsaking of sin with the
promise, "He shall have
1. A Contrast pictured, Psalm 32:1-5
This is one of the seven penitential
psalms and may refer to David's sin in
regard to Bathsheba and Uriah. The
psalmist shows his condition in the 3rd
and 4th verses, when he "kept
and tried to excuse himself to his con
science, but this method only served to
increase his misery. God's hand was
heavy
upon him so that his secret re
morse not only preyed on his spirit, but
impaired his health as though from old
age.
But when David admitted his guilt
and confessed his iniquity to the Lord,
what a change came into his heart and
life! The relief, the joy which forgive
ness gave him, were so great that he
could sing, "Blessed is the man whose
transgression is forgiven, whose sin is
J. M. F. Brown, writing on the S. S.
lesson for December 1953 gives this il
lustration: "A certain man sought the
help of a doctor, but treatments brought
no results. Finally the M.D. said, 'We do
not seem to be getting anywhere. Are
you sure there is
your
not something on
conscience'
The man flew into a
rage and said, T am coming to you for
medical advice, not to have you probe
into my
life.'
He went away angry, but
returned later to say, T do have some
thing on my mind. I was the executor of
an estate and I cheated my brother out
of part of his inheritance.' The doctor
advised the man to tell his brother about
this sin and to make restitution to him.
The man did so and then said, 'Thank
God, the burden is lifted. For the first
time in years I can eat and sleep with
out nervous disturbances.' The pangs of
guilt can impell us to do things that will
insure spiritual health. And physical
health too!"
2. The blessedness of sins confessed.
Romans 4:7
Words fail to express this blessedness
except to those who have experienced
forgiveness, who know what it means
to have their sins covered by the blood
of the Saviour who became sin for us.
3. God's promise to those who confess
their sins. 1 John 1:9
John says in this verse, "Try Him out,
confess your sins. He, who has promised
to forgive, is faithful and just,
so we can
believe that He has 'blotted out, as a
thick cloud, thy transgressions' and that
'He has buried them in the depths of the
sea.' "
"Far as east from west is distant
He hath put away our
Him, for it is the word of a
Many times I have failed and too often
because I forgot my sense of humor.
the
My dear Mrs. Beatty:
Please thank the ladies of the Synodi
cal in our behalf for this lovely box of
fruit they
sent us through you.
We had a nice little party on board be
fore sailing fifteen I believe. It is fine
to feel that Christian friends are behind
us. The Bible reading and prayer gave
us a feeling of oneness. We do want the
women of the Synodical to know that we
appreciate their gifts of
prayer and
fruit. We shall remember all of you
before the Throne of Grace.
Sincerely yours in His glad service,
