Editorial Notes
By Walter McCarroll
Embracing a Lie. A young Chinese, 21, reared
and educated in a Christian Mission, wrote to a
former teacher as follows:
"Now I am no longer the former man you knew.
Apart from my body which is the same, my whole
mind and thought have changed. I have become a
new man in the classless revolution pioneer corps,
a loyal believer of Marx-Leninism. I shall never
live for myself alone but for the masses. What satis
fies my aspirations now is the progress of a happy
socialism to a communist state. In this teaching I
have found unimagined blessing and happiness. I am
very sorry that I must inform you that I do no
longer believe in God nor worship Him. I can no
longer address you as a religious brother, but I
send you my revolutionary love."
Commenting on the above a pastor said: "Con
fronted as we are by a fanatical communist faith in
which ardent young
men embrace a lie as though
it were truth, we cannot long stand embracing
Truth as though it were a pleasant fiction."
Reformation Translation Fellowship. This organi
zation seems to be a growing and expanding one.
In addition to a Board of Directors in this country
it now has a British Committee with its members
Down-
located in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Portrush,
caster, and London, England. It has five members
on its Chinese Staff located in Kobe, Hong Kong,
New York City, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and
Monterey, California. The Fellowship issues a
Chinese journal called The Reformed Faith and
Life, as well as books, booklets and short tracts.
The following books have been translated into
Chinese and published by the Fellowship:
Christianity and Liberalism, by J. Gresham
Machen ; The Reformed Doctrine of Predestination,
by Loraine Boettner; The Inspiration of the Scrip
tures, by Loraine Boettner; Vicarious Atonement
Through Christ, by Louis Berkhof.
Dr. Vos writes: "Miss Viola Cameron's book,
God's Plan and Man's Destiny, has come from the
press in Chinese translation, and has been circulat
ed among our Chinese readers in many countries.
Other translation and publication projects are going
forward. The Chinese magazine, Reformed Faith
and Life, has been regularly
issued."
Board Meetings. As already reported the Board
at its meeting December 14 received a conditional
offer of $1,000 for the sending out of another
minister-missionary to in September. We
.
have reason to believe that the full amount of the
$5,000 necessary to send out this missionary will
be pledged as soon as people know that they still
have the right to designate their contributions, and
that such contributions must be used for the desig
nated projects. The meeting called for January 18
apparently was to discuss the policy of the Board
with regard to our schools in Syria and Cyprus.
From what we can learn this is a revival of the issue
that was bitterly debated in the Synods of 1932 and
1933, and which ended with an almost unanimous
vote in favor of the schools.
Sailings. The Weirs were scheduled to sail for
Cyprus January 10. They had remained some four
months beyond the end of their furlough period,
68
without salary, that Mr. Weir might continue his
campaign to raise funds for the school building.
He writes:
'The total cost of the basement and ground
floor, of the proposed new building, now completed
and being used is $70,000.00. A total of $60,000
has been raised, including $21,000 raised in the pres
ent campaign, and the remaining $10,000 has been
borrowed and remains unpaid. The next step of
course is to pay this debt, then get on the auditorium
which is to cost about $28,000.
"A number of charitable Foundations and busi
ness concerns have been asked to contribute. The
response has not been entirely negative, one Foun
dation having responded generously, and there is
hope that others will
The raising of $21,000 during their furlough
period, the larger part of this amount outside of
our church, represented a vast amount of hard
work, perseverence in making new contacts, and
seeking of the Lord's blessing upon each step tak
en. They deserve and will have the prayer support
of the Church.
Miss Lynn was scheduled to sail for Japan from
San Francisco February 5. Her return to her field
of labor is eagerly awaited. Her visit home has
done much to create new interest in the band of
faithful believers that have been added to the
Church since our missionaries first arrived in Kobe.
The Covenanter Book Room, now so generally
known and widely used, is in large measure due to
her determination and persistence in response to
the Spirit's prompting guidance. But that will still
leave only one single woman missionary as Miss
Huston is scheduled to return home in the spring
which will not be long after Miss Lynn's arrival in
Kobe. Mr. Hansen indicates how great is the need
for women missionaries as Bible class teachers. We
are commanded, not to pray the Lord of the harvest
to raise up tithers, but to send forth laborers into
His harvest.
CURRENT EVENTS .
spend nearly enough money to provide proper buildings and
staff. Yet this may be shortsighted economy, for it eliminates
any possibility of reformation.
