of Mr. Edward J. Dougall, a life long
member of the congregation and to rela
tives of Mr. William Wright, his neph
ew. They passed to their heavenly re
ward about a month apart. They are
missed at our church services and by
their many relatives and friends.
The World Day
of Prayer was ob
served with a special meeting at the
church on the evening of February 25,
to which the congregation was invited.
The meeting was in charge of the Mis
sionary Society and Mrs. Charles D.
Murphy presided. The work and needs
of each of our mission fields were pre
sented and then followed by prayer.
The new officers of the W.M.S. are:
President, Mrs. Charles D. Murphy;
Vice-President, Mrs. William Pinkerton;
Secretary, Mrs. Edson Ely; Treasurer,
Mrs. James Park.
The C.Y.P.U. enjoyed a party on
April 1
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
William Pinkerton.
MONTCLAUt CONGREGATION
The W. M. S. presented a program
"that was different" for their annual
Self-denial meeting. The congregation
assembled at the church Friday even
ing, March 4, for dessert served by the
Social Committee with the aid of the
Junior boys. After the social hour, Mrs.
Harry Hunter, the T. O. Supt., presided
over a well-planned program on Tith
ing and Self-denial. Those who assisted
were Mrs. Orrin Ferry, Mrs. Mario Messa
Mrs. Edwin McBurney, and the Junior
Misses Jean and Diane Messa, Faith
McBurney and Virginia Donaldson. An
offering of over $230.00 was received
for missionary salaries.
The second part of the program was
in observance of the World's Day of
Prayer and after a period of Psalmsinging
and prayer, all left for our
homes with a feeling that "it was good
for us to have been there."
The March meeting of the W.M.S. was
in the home of Mrs. Ethel Ferry. Air
outstanding note from this meeting was
the welcoming into our W. M. S. two
new members, Miss Jean McKnight of
New York, and Mrs. Ethel Voeste as an
associate member, making our total
W. M. S. membership now 21.
At our communion service on April
3, 32 were at the Lord's table. The
pastor's assistant, Rev. Sam Boyle, gave
inspiring messages, the closing one on
Sabbath evening dealing with the work
in Japan and the ever increasing threat
to the liberty of all the people by the
sinister power of communism. We en
joyed having Miss Mary
Jane Park
from Geneva College with us for all
the services and having so many from
New York join us in the last evening
sermon.
CHICAGO
Mr. Gene Stewart of our Winchester
congregation worshiped with us on
Sabbath, March 20. He was in Chicago
awaiting his discharge from the army.
We regret having lost two of our
faithful members from our midst. Mr.
and Mrs. Allen Cummings will be missed
in their faithful attendance at church
services. Mrs. Cummings was a great
help in our W.M.S. New York City's
gain is our loss.
We've proved that the men of our
congregation can really
cook! Our bi
monthly dinner on March 26 was cook
ed entirely by the men under the chair
manship of Mr. Russell Huck. Hats off
to the men for a delicious chicken
dinner. Following the dinner we were
entertained by the Juniors.
Mr.
Paul Levy has recently under
gone surgery, but we are happy to re
port that he is completely recovered
and back to his usual routine.
The
young snap back quickly.
Two of our members are at present
on hospital beds. We trust in the Lord's
care over Mrs. Collier and Mrs. Thomas
Jack.
Mondays and Fridays are proving
to be very active nights at our church
as we have set aside these evenings
for church cleaning. We are washing
walls, painting, and doing a thorough
house cleaning. We hope to get the en
tire church in spic and span order. Two
floors are nearly
completed with one
more to go. We return home with dishpan
hands and sore knees, but the fel
lowship
and results are well worth it.
The following
officers were elected
at the annual business meeting of the
W.M.S. President, Mrs. Norman Carson;
Vice President, Mrs. Richard Bowes;
Secretary, Mrs. Russell Huck; Treasur
er, Mrs. Hyman Levy.
The C.Y.P.U. started the ball rolling
in their annual effort to raise money to
send some of their number to Camp
Covamikoi. The opening
gun was the
second annual "Popcorn Party" spon
sored for the "benefit" of the congre
gation, which was held in the church
basement, March 5. Those who attended
left with a few less pennies in the pock
et, but the C. Y.
The Chicago Congregation played host
April 5, to the GENEVANS, a splendid
from Geneva College. From
choral group
the moment the bus rolled in, to the
moment we shepherded the sleepy-eyed
singers back to the bus the next morn
ing, we 'who had contact with these
representatives of our college were im
their calibre. The concert
presented and we were
gratified to have nearly a full house.
The presence of several Geneva alum
ni contributed in no small way to the
success of the enterprise. Come again
THIRD CHURCH,
PHILADELPHIA, PA.
World Day of Prayer was observed
in Philadelphia with the combined con
gregations of the United and Third
Churches meeting under the leadership
of Dr. Mary Elizabeth Coleman. Sincere
earnest petitions were mad-e by various
members of both congregations in be
half of every phase of our denomina
tional work for the Master. Third
Church people served refreshments at
the close of this pleasant and inspiring
fellowship.
Mrs. Robert J. Crawford, Sr. was
hostess for the March meeting of the
Women's Missionarj' Society. Mrs.
George Price led the devotional period.
Miss Jane McCleary was re-elected
president for the coming year; Mrs.
Herman Everett, Vice President: Miss
Annabel McCullough, treasurer: and
Miss Isabel Crawford, secretary. The
society voted to send one hundred dol
lars to Synod's Budget in memory of
Dr. Ida Scott, long known, admired
and loved by Third Church folks.
The impressive service of Ordination
and Installation of Deacons was held
on March 6, when Miss Margaret Mc
Candless and Mr. Frank Haussmann
received the office of deacon. Our pas
tor, Rev. George W. Price, gave the
charge to the candidates using I Cor.
10: 25, "All to the Glory of God" as
his text. Rev. Dr. Finley M. Wilson,
our pastor emeritus, gave the charge
to the congregation, concluding with a
magnificent
prayer.
The fund for the American Bible
Society continues to grow as the con
tributions are made by members of
the Sabbath School when their birth
days are observed. Miss Elizabeth Mc-
Hatton sends a greeting
card to each
one, and annually empties the bank
which holds the birthday offerings. The
Sabbath School offering for March 20
was designated for our mission in Cyp
rus. An informative talk about our work
on the island was given by Miss Isabel
Crawford on the previous Sabbath
Day.
We note with joy
Elder Thomas Armstrong to the High
the promotion of
er Life on March 13, just one day be
fore he would have celebrated his 81st
birthday. We miss his genial presence
among us, his Biblical posers, and will
ing cooperation. He had an enviable
record of many
years of unbroken con
stant attendance at Sabbath School and
Church, his prayers showed the depth
of his faith and his intimacy with the
