cepting a gospel of which they have nev
er heard" We can only
answer that
God will deal with every man according
to the measure of light and opportunity
which was given him.
The first concern of Jesus in these
words is for those who have had the op
portunity but who have neglected it. I
suppose there has never been a period
of greater opportunity in the world's
history, than there is today. Never be
fore has there been such a wide circu
lation of the printed Word. Never before
could so many
be reached through the
medium of radio and television. But in
the day of judgment there will be vast
numbers who will say, "We listened to
Billy Graham on the radio. We lived be
side the church all our lives, we never
missed communion and we attended all
the church suppers. We were honest
with our neighbors and didn't indulge in
bad habits." But while those things may
all be commendable, men will still be
held responsible if they failed to make
full use of the privileges and responsi
bilities which were given.
These words apply to nations as well
as to individuals. Sodom was responsible
as a corporate city. Sodom was de
stroyed because the city was wicked.
Abraham pled for the city, that if there
were fifty
righteous the Lord would
not destroy it. Then he began setting
the figure lower. Finally he asked if the
city would be saved for ten righteous.
But there were not even that many and
so God's judgment was executed. Na
tions are responsible before God. Surely
the nations which have been so greatly
blessed with material abundance and
with the knowledge of Christ should
give recognition to Christ the King, and
endeavor to promote his kingdom.
There will be many surprises on the
judgment day. Many who enjoyed great
prosperity
and spiritual advantages on
earth may be numbered with those ont he
not have so great advantages, but who
used the opportunities which were giv
en, numbered with those on the right
hand.
For Discussion
1. What blessing
or advantages do we
enjoy, which will place a greater respon
sibility
upon us
2. Show how these words of Jesus
have applied to nations and cities of the
past.
3. What are some of the responsibili
ties which rest upon us as members of
the church
2. That as a church we may accept
our responsibility to evangelize.
the seminary on May 2.
4. For the congregations that are
The Uniform Programs for the Wom
are off the press
and may be ordered from Mrs. Herald
Hanna, Bloomington, Indiana, R.R. 10.
The price is twelve cents each.
Dear Mrs. McFarland:
Kenneth and I would like to express
our thanks to the Synodical for the
money which we receive each month
helping on our rent. It was a very
pleasant surprise when we learned of the
action taken by
the Synodical in this
respect. We are both growing in sales
resistance, but we find opportunity for
spending money
so much greater here
than in Syria. We are continually
amazed how money seems to slip
through our fingers. Not foolish spend
ing, but there are clothes, household
needs, etc., that must be replenished
during the year, so we can usually find
where the money went. Perhaps it would
be nice if we were like the Israelites in
the wilderness 'their clothes did not wax
but then the same dress every day
would be mighty monotonous.
I should have written sooner to thank
the synodical for the lovely orchid I
received when we landed. It was a
REAL THRILL to me for it was the
first orchid I had ever had.
again.
A Thought for you :
Our president, Mrs. A. J. McFarland
gave us those lines last summer at Grin
CIGARETTE FIRMS HATE THIS GUY
SHERIDAN,
Ind.,Ken Biddle's cam
paigns to get his factory
employes to
quit smoking have worked so well that
Monday he posted his offer for a third
year $100 to anyone who swears off
smoking
through all of 1955.
Out of nine who signed the pledge
Jan. 1, Biddle paid off to eight at the
Christmas party
of Biddle Screw Prod
ucts Co., employes. A year ago, only six
stuck it out among
ever
19 who signed up.
"It's the best business investment I
made,"
said Biddle,
who is 47 and
quit smoking 20 years ago. "Their gen
eral health is better, and they don't
waste time
There weren't many
of the 103 em
ployes who smoked at the Christmas
party
in the $40,000 community center
which Biddle donated to this town. He
still lets men smoke in the plant, but he
won't hire women smokers nor men who
chew tobacco.
The $100 prize offer started when
Biddle decided to help his brother, Van,
one of the factory workers, swear off.
When he paid Van his $100 at the 1952
Christmas party, he made a new offer to
all employes.
WHEN MODERN METHODS FAIL
Both the photographer and the mother
had failed to make the restless little
four-year-old sit still long enough to
have her picture taken. Finally the
photographer suggested that "the little
darling"
might be quiet if her mother
would leave the room for a few minutes.
During her absence the picture was suc
cessfully taken. On the way home the
mother asked:
"What did the nice man say to make
mother's little darling sit
"He thed, 'You thit thtill, you little
newthunth, or I'll knock your block
tho I that thtill," she explained.
A CLEAR INFERENCE
A preacher was once asked what was
the most painful moment of his career.
He replied: "Once when I was preach
ing, a woman in one of the front pews
scrambled in her handbag and brought
out a hearing aid. She put it in her ear.
After ten minutes she took it out again,
put it back in her handbag and sat per
fectly still for the rest of the
