THE RESULT OF BELIEVING IN
CHRIST
Here is the high point of our lesson:
"He (the) believer hath eternal life and
is not come into judgment. Scripture
has not been given to us merely that we
might know Christ as a historical person,
but that believing in Him we might have
life in its fullness, both here upon earth
and in heaven. "I am come that they
might have life and that they
might have
it more
(John 10:10).
Eternal life is more than the expecta
tion of heaven. The life that is eternal be
gins as soon as one believes on Christ,
consummation in heaven.
and reaches its
This thought is amplified by Jesus when
He says that the believer "is not come
into judgment." Williams translates it,
"He will never come under condemna
tion."
The judgment of the believer takes
place at the moment he accepts Christ,
and the final judgment has no fears for
him. Godet expresses it in these words,
"The judgment is thus for him an accom
plished thing. If therefore the word re
ceived with faith frees the believer from
the judgment, it is because it anticipates
it."
A gentleman while crossing the Bay
of Biscay, became exceedingly alarmed
and anxious as he beheld what he
thought was an approaching hurricane or
tornado. He trembled and addressed him
self to one of the sailors: "Do you think
she will be able to live through it"
'Through
what"
inquired the sailor.
"Through that fast approaching
The old sailor smiled and said, "Sir, you
need not be alarmed; that storm will
never touch us, it has passed
So, in regard to the believer; judgment,
so far as siri is concerned, is past already.
Christ has been tried,
condemned and ex
ecuted in his stead for his sins.
THE SURE WORD OF CHRIST
Jesus has given us His sure word that
these things are true. "Verily,
"I most solemnly say unto
No
stronger word could be used to express
that assurance. Christ's word can always
be trusted, but when we find His words
prefaced with "AMEN" it is an indica
tion it is a truth that He wants us to be
lieve absolutely and without a doubt.
FOR DISCUSSION
1. When does eternal life begin for
the believer in Christ
2. Why do believers need have no fear
of the judgment
3. Discuss the meaning of the word
"verily" and how it is used in Scripture.
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS
1. For individuals in your community
who are in need of life as a present pos
session.
2. For our president and members of
congress,
that they may
spiritual needs of our nation.
the National Reform Association and to
have Mr. Patterson in our midst again.
NEW YORK CITY: Mrs. Robert Hen
Mrs. Richard Weir is improving slowly.
OAKDALE: Mrs. May Hood, who
has been ill for several months, passed
away at her daughter's home on Novem
R. P. Church on Thanksgiving Day,
where Mrs. Hood had long been a faith
ful, dependable member. Three children
mourn her passing: Mrs. Norman Frie
man, and Lawrence Hood of Oakdale,
and Mrs. George Kerr of Pennsylvania.
Sabbath, October 24, is long to be re
services, guided by the Holy
Since the last Communion Miss Janet
REHOBOTH: Fifteen years since the
LISBON CONGREGATION lost one
of its lifelong members in the passing of
Anna L. Smith, a retired teacher, who
after a lingering illness was called to her
heavenly home on December 5, 1954.
THE PHOEBES OF BLOOMING
TON, Indiana, wish to pay tribute to
the memory of Mrs. Jack Baird who,
early one morning, was called quite sud
denly to her eternal home. Although Eu
genia, because of her work and heart con
dition, could not often attend our meet
ings, she retained a keen interest in
what we were doing. Always she enjoyed
her work even though it did tax her
strength. Her friendliness radiated every
where among those with whom she came
in contact. Any
occasion was brightened
by her genial personality. "Thou shalt
be missed because thy seat will be emp
ty."
We extend our sympathy to her hus
band, her three daughters, the grand
children, and other members of her fam
LOS ANGELES: Mrs. Caroline Sloan
was called to her reward on September
29, 1954. In other days she was well
known amongst the active young wom
en of the Old Eighth Street Church and
was ever alert to the needs of missions at
home and abroad. Mrs. Sloan moved to
California with her daughter Mrs. Don
McEwen, with whom she made her home.
For years she had been almost a shutin,
seldom having the joy of attending
church, yet her interest in the work of
the church held a warm place in her
heart. The Los Angeles and Santa Ana
pastors kept in close contact with the
home and she delighted in the visits.
To visit her was to be impressed with her
enthusiasm and vigor of mind even when
the physical powers were
not able to
keep up. Her home going leaves a big
vacancy in the McEwen family life but
precious memories will be treasured until
the glorious reuniting
FIRST BEAVER FALLS: Dr. S.
Bruce Willson was the assistant at our
theme was
Covenanting"
"Covenanting."
"Repentant
impressive Covenant Signing Service was
held on October 8 with an address "The
Spirit in Which We Should Covenant"
by
our pastor Rev. D. Howard Elliott
and an address "Covenant Keeping" by
Dr. Willson. The congregation (by fami
lies) then signed the Brief Covenant. The
Communion Service on Sabbath with the
subjects "Covenant Grace" and "Cove
nant Fullfillment" brought this never to
