Did you ever listen very carefully
when your parents told you how to do a
certain piece of work and then decide to
do it the way you thought best Maybe
you can remember a time when you
were very tired or your mind was con
fused and you didn't care if you fol
lowed your parents' or leaders' instruc
tions and advice. If you have had such
an experience, I'm sure you have
learned how important it is to do your
work exactly as you have been told.
I am going to tell you a very sad
story about Nadab and Abihu. They
were punished because they did not fol
low God's commands concerning their
work in the worship of the Tabernacle.
One day the two older sons of Aaron,
Nadab and Abihu, were in the Holy
Place. It was part of their work to take
in a censer, some burning coals from
the great altar of burnt offering in
front of the Tabernacle, and with these
coals to light the fire in the small gold
en altar of incense, which stood inside
the Holy Place, near the veil.
These young men had been drinking
wine and their heads were not clear.
They did not think of what they were
doing. Instead of taking the fire from
the altar of burnt-offering, they took
some other fire, and with this they went
378
into the Holy Place to burn the incense
upon the golden altar. God was very
angry with these young men for coming
into His holy house in a drunken state,
and for doing what He had forbidden
them to do. No fire except that from
the great altar was allowed in the Holy
Place.
While they were standing by the gold
en altar, fire came out from it, and they
both fell down dead in the Holy Place.
When Moses heard it, he said "This is
the sign that God's house is holy, and
that God's worship is holy; God will
make people to fear Him because He is
holy."
Moses would not allow Aaron, the
father of the two men, to touch their
dead bodies, he said, "You have on the
robes of the high priest. You are leading
in the service of worship. God's work
must go on, and must not stop, even
though you are greatly troubled."
Then Aaron stood by the altar and
offered the sacrifice, though his heart
was very sad.
When the men had been buried, Mo
ses said, "After this, let no priest drink
wine or strong drink before he enters
the Tabernacle. Be sober when you are
leading the worship of the people, so
you will know the difference between
the things that are holy and those that
are common; and so that you may teach
the people all the laws which the Lord
has given them."
The rule that Moses gave the priests
to be kept when they were leading the
worship of the people, not to drink wine
or strong drink, is a good rule for every
one to keep, not only when worshiping
God but at all times.
In His Word God has told us how we
must worship Him. True worship must
come from the heart. If our hearts are
full of love for God, we will worship
Him according to His will. Sometimes,
like Nadab and Abihu, we take strong
drink or alcohol into our bodies. It is
quickly carried from the stomach, in the
blood stream, to the brain, where much
of it remains. There it starts to put the
brain to sleep. Alcohol goes first to the
fore-brain which controls bad instincts
like anger, hatred and the desire to
fight. This part of the brain helps you
to love God, your parents and your
friends. Always remember, alcohol puts
this part of your brain to sleep first be
cause, with love and self-control asleep,
you are not yourself. Love for God no
longer rules your actions and you will
do things which are very wrong and sin
ful.
Your brain is precious. Be sure to
keep it clear and alert. Never take any
thing into your body to harm it. You
alone must decide who will rule your
life. Will it be God or sin Ask God to
help you each day to make the right
decision. "Choose you this day whom
you will serve but as for me and my
house, we will serve the Lord." Joshua
24:15.
For your notebooks.
Nadab and Abihu made God angry by
the way they worshiped Him. Make a
list of ways in which we displease God
in our worship today. Make another list
of ways of honoring God in our worship.
THE PROPHET OF JUDAH'S
DECLINE
Jer. 22; 36; 3 Kings 23:31-24:7
PRINTED TEXT Jeremiah 23:1-9,
24, 25; 36:4, 20, 21
MEMORY: Jeremiah 22:13, "Woe unto
him that buildeth his house by unright
that useth his neighbor's service with
Jeremiah prophesied in the reign of
five kings, from Josiah to Zedekiah, in
whose reign Nebuchadnezzer carried
Judah captive to Babylon. Jeremiah was
contemporary with Zephaniah, Habak
kuk, Ezekiel and Daniel. He was the
outstanding prophet of the last days of
Judah. He began to prophesy in the fif
teenth year of the reign of Josiah, when
he was quite young (1:6). That was just
after Josiah had begun to purge the land
from idolatry. His enemies respected,
while they feared him.
When Nebuchadnezzer captured Je
rusalem, he had respect for the in
tegrity of Jeremiah, and left him at lib
erty to go with the captives to Babylon,
or to remain with the remnant in Jeru
salem. He decided to remain. When
Johanan gained control of the remnant
in Jerusalem, he decided, against the
advice of Jeremiah, to go for safety to
Egypt. Jeremiah was carried with them
and died in Egypt. There is a story that
he was stoned by his own people.
The Certain Fulfillment of Prophecy
In Chap. 22, Jeremiah foretold the sad
end of the Kingdom of Judah. His mes
sage was always in the spirit of a warn
ing that offered, or at least implied, a
way of blessing. Josiah was seeking to
follow that way. The four kings that
followed him on the throne would not
listen to the warning. Always,
were two courses open to them;
downward, the other upward.
