Church News
I moderated a call for the Topeka
Congregation on June 1. Licentiate
Donald McClurkin was chosen on the
first ballot, and the call was made
unanimous.
ALMONTE, CANADA
D. R. Taggart
Visiting with Mrs. Bella Burns and
Wm. Burns over the Easter week end
were Mr. and Mrs. Sam Burns and
Danny of Hamilton, and Mr. and Mrs.
Ernie Burridge and Erna Lee of Otta
wa.
The hostess for the April meeting of
the W.M.S. was Mrs. Milton Bowes.
This was* an evening meeting.
Mr. Will Burns is recovering from an
accident which resulted in a severe
chest injury and a fractured rib. He is
now home from the hospital.
The annual congregational meeting
was held at the church on May 3. The
new officers are Mr. James Morton,
Chairman, and Miss Elizabeth Burns,
Secretary. Prayer Meeting was held
before the business was discussed.
Rev. and Mrs. F. F. Reade left on
the 2nd of May for Cambridge, Mass.,
The Christian Amendment . . .
(Continued from p. 366)
shortly, but it isn't necessary at all that
all do it on the same day. The others.
perhaps, will make no comment, but we
do expect that there will be at least one
or two others, and possibly as many as
four others who will introduce the Bill
in the House. We will have to wait a
little longer in
the Senate, since the
Senator whom we hoped would do it
left Tuesday evening to be gone for the
rest of the week, and we await his reply
when he returns.
I am now on my way to the office in
Pittsburgh. I want to say of my trip to
Washington, in general, that I consid
ered it most profitable. It had its prob
lems, its heart breaks, but it also bore
much fruit, and we have learned some
things that we are sure will be helpful
in the future in holding
what gains we
make. If you will indulge a further
story I will try next time to give a
brief summary of what transpired and
some of our hopes for the future. It is
to a great extent your prayers, and your
money, that has made any of this work
a success. You deserve to know of some
of the fruits. We will try and give those
next time.
June 8, 1955
Sincerely,
A. J. McFarland
and will
attend the Presbyterial. On
Sabbath the services were in charge of
the elders and the Y. P.
A large number attended the social
on the evening of May 6 at the home
of Mrs. Jane Waddell. Our purpose was
to help Mr. and Mrs. John Morton cele
brate their 15th Wedding Anniversary.
The anniversary cake was enjoyed by
everyone of course.
Spring has arrived here in Canada
and we are happy to report that Mr.
and Mrs. Will White have also arrived
from Florida.
HOPKINTON
Miss Minnie Anderson, the oldest
member of our congregation, is very ill
in the Memorial hospital at Manchester.
We enjoyed the fellowship of the Rev.
and Mrs. John O. Edgar and Louise,
and were much helped by his ministry
in connection with our recent commun
ion.
Mr. Ray Joseph who has completed
his second year at the Seminary
has
gone to the Indian Mission to minister
while the Rev. and Mrs. D. C. Ward are
away.
Mr. Hugh McGlade who has been
treasurer of our congregation for more
than a quarter of a century was honored
on the occasion of his 80th birthday by
his family, the congregation and other
friends who met in his home. His daugh
ter, Mrs. Ruth Stevenson, had come
from near Detroit to be present on that
occasion. Mr.
McGlade was presented
with a handsome (Thompson's) Bible
by his pastor on behalf of his friends.
Mr. J. R. Stevenson of Farmington,
Mich., a former member of our congre
gation, stopped over night, taking his
wife and family
to the funeral of his
mother, Mrs. James Stevenson of Clar
inda.
Mr. and Mrs. John Finlay attended
the funeral of their aunt, Mrs. Steven
son, at Clarinda. Mrs. Stevenson was
known and loved in our congregation
and community.
ROSE POINT
Rev. Harold Harrington of New
Castle ably assisted our pastor at our
Spring communion on April 24.
Two new members have recently
come to our congregation, sons born to
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Stoner and to
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bessell.
Martin Hutcheson was the winner of
a bronze medal in a Junior Speech Con
test held in New Castle under the di
rection of the Lawrence County Wom
an's Christian Temperance Union. Lois
Stickle, a member of our Sabbath
School, participated in a Silver Medal
Contest also held in New Castle.
The young men of the congregation
have been busy recently putting a new
ceiling on the entrance hall and audi
torium of the church. It is a decided im
provement.
Paul Robb, recently
graduated from
the Seminary, preached for us while our
pastor Rev. T. R. Hutcheson was ab
sent assisting in communion at the
Parnassus church.
Linda McElwain, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Harry McElwain, is able to be at
church again after being kept indoors
most of the winter with a bronchial in
fection.
Merle Wilson represented our session
at the meeting of Presbytery held in
the College Hill Church.
Stephanne Dudash is a graduate of
Princeton High School this year. She is
assistant secretary
School.
of our Sabbath
The Daily Vacation Bible School will
be held at Princeton school this year
June 13 to 24. Rev. and Mrs. T. R.
Hutcheson and Miss Mary Jane Wilson
assist as teachers in this school.
A number from Rose Point attended
the Pittsburgh Presbyterial held in the
Parnassus church in New Kensington.
Miss Anna Blair was timekeeper and
Mrs. T. R. Hutcheson and Miss Mary
Jane Wilson are members of the Exe
cutive Board.
CAMBRIDGE, MASS.
Our Communion season was a bless
ing to all who were able to attend. Rev.
Claude Brown from Selma was our as
sistant and broke the Bread of Life to
us most faithfully. But he was not
through when Sabbath services were
over. The New York Women's Presby
terial met the next Tuesday and Rev.
Brown was the evening
first night.
speaker the
All of the messages and fellowship
which he afforded us were a witness to
his walk with Christ.
The second night of Presbyterial was
in the hands of Rev. Sam Boyle who
not only showed films from Japan, but
challenged us to pray urgently for the
work of Christ in Japan now.
Last month several of the men of the
congregation spent some long
and late
hours at the church. They refinished
the Sabbath School room. Of course
there was new paint, but they
up an acoustic tile ceiling
also put
and bright
new flourescent light fixtures. The dif
ference is amazing and helps out great
ly on occasions when this room is used
for dinners, entertainments, etc.
