pheme,"
sins,"
can make an intensive and practical
study of writing, publishing and market
ing.
Every missionary
who has had to do
no more than write a prayer letter is
aware of the growing importance of
writing in mission work. Writing
studied at Moody
will be
summer school from
the angle of newspapers and the news
story, feature articles, religious maga
zines, tracts, rewriting, editing, and
writing for new literates.
Students will have plenty of oppor
tunity to demonstrate the saying that
the only way to learn writing is to write
written assignments will be a vital
part of the course.
Publishing studies will include : se
lection of material, writing
nationals, editing and proof reading, lay
program for
out, printing, financing, copyrights.
Studies of marketing will include :
distribution, sales, tract and book clubs,
bookstores, catalogs, bookmobiles, col
porteurs, local libraries, growing market
through literacy, promotion and adver
tising.
Students will be able to observe the
various techniques in
action as they
make field trips to Chicago newspapers,
magazines, print plants and others.
This missionary
"literature" course
will be taught by members of the Moody
Bible Institute faculty and by experts in
the various branches of the field.
Tuition is free.
OPEN LETTER
"LEST WE FORGET," NOTE:
1. That the Covenanter Church of
Scotland, in its 1866 Testimony reprint,
Ch. 12, p. 229 on Worship states: "We
testify against the celebration of Christ
mas, or other festivals of the Papal or
church."
Episcopal
2. That "Blue Banner Faith and Life,"
Ian.-Mar. 1953, pps. 8-11, condemns ob
servance of Christmas, Easter, and all
other holy days so-called, except God's
own holy day, the Christian Sabbath.
3. That Gal. 4:10 seems to forbid such
man appointed days, but not from keep
ing holy the Sabbath Day. "Ye observe
days, and months, and times, and
Mk. 2:27, 28; Rev. 1:10; Ex. 20:8; and
others.
4. That the word "Christmas" is made
and
"mass."
"Christ"
up of two parts
IVhy the 's' was dropped, the writer does
not know.
5. That so-called holy days are largely
commercialized for monetary gain.
6. That the more the observance of
special days are multiplied, the less em
phasis there is on strict Sabbath keep
ing. I have a Christian friend who at
tended a Bible class which he said was
over 2,000, so large that it had to meet
in a theatre. But it had over 30 special
days a year in honor of Lincoln, of
Washington, Easter, etc., until finally
the class dwindled down to several hun
dred.
7. That more drunkenness, excepting
possibly New Year's Day, more liquor
advertising, more lies, more loss to legit
imate and necessary business ("10% to
25% amounting to several billions in
America alone"), and more crimes are
occasioned by the celebration of Christ
mas, than that of any other day in the
year. David's sin gave "great occasion
to the enemies of the Lord to blas
2 Sam. 12 :14.
8. That it is the duty of Christians and
the Church to witness against the sins of
the Lord's people and others and of the
generation in which they live, regardless
of the risk of being called "pessimists."
"Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice
like a trumpet, and show my people
their transgression, and the house of
Jacob their
Isa. 58:1.
R. G. Graham
Dr. C. E. Caskey informs me
that
the item in the Witness of February 13
regarding his preaching at Oakdale is
misinformation. Although the news
came to us officially there seems to
have been a mix up in regard to initials,
last names, or possibly a case of mistak
en identity. We do not believe that it
was an effort at impersonation or it
would have been detected by the people
present. We are told truth must even
tually
veiling
prevail and we await the un
of that truth.
The Editor.
All those who gave a special address
at the Grinnell Conference of last year
will please note that the addresses of
that Convention have about all been
printed and the rest will be soon. These
have appeared in the Covenanter Wit
ness and are to be put into book form.
If you
have changes that you wish
made or if there are typographical er
rors,
would each writer look over your
own as it appeared in the Witness and
send in corrections to the Editor.
The Christian Digest sent us notice
that they will need 40,000 new subscrib
ers if -they are to continue publication
and in order to get those 40,000 sub
scribers they are offering to send to new
subscribers the magazine at one-half its
regular price or $1.50 to you if you are
new. This magazine is the same size in
pages, but not in number of pages, as
the Readers' Digest and contains quite a
good deal of good material and is a
monthly. I think if you will mention our
name and send your subscription direct
to Christian Digest Publishing Company,
1420 Robinson Road, Lake Drive, Grand
Rapids 6, Michigan, the subscription will
be honored or if you prefer to send
through us we will be glad to forward
the subscription. We try to help this
worthy magazine which received a spe
cial award in the Evangelical Press As
sociation Contest in 1954. The publishers
are Zondervan & Co.
LETTERS TO CONGBESS ABE
VITAL
Plans are under way for one or more
representatives of the Christian Amend
ment Movement to visit members of
Congress relative to introducing the
Christian Amendment bill in the 84th
Congress. This task will be very much
easier if friends of the Christian Amend
ment will cooperate now in a letterwriting
project.
We earnestly urge you to write letters
to the following: your two Senators and
the Representative from your congres
sional district. They can
be reached
at the Senate Office Building or the
House Office Building, Washington, D.C.
Write briefly, telling these men that
you are interested in the proposed Chris
tian Amendment to our national Consti
tution and asking that they support it
by introducing the bill if they are asked
to do so and by working in its behalf in
Committee or on the floor of Congress.
If you receive favorable replies to
your letters,
to the office of the Christian Amend
will you please send them
ment Movement. They will be of great
value to those who go to Washington
in the interest of the bill.
It is vital that thousands of letters
be sent to members of Congress in the
next two or three weeks, and it is our
hope that all readers of "The Cove
nanter Witness" will respond whole
heartedly to this request.
