joy and value of our W. M. S. "Greeters."
through Vermont we admired the beau
tiful buildings of glistening white mar
ble, which were so enduring in appear
ance and will doubtless stand for years
to come. Also while living in Indiana we
often passed the beautiful and sturdy
structures of the state university built
of limestone,
erected to serve future
generations and at the same time to
present a beautiful picture to the eye.
They
stand permanently in the place
chosen for them.
The Lord has a chosen place for us in
which to stand and serve. "Stand there
truth,"
fore having your loins girt with
etc. He expects us to be in our place,
at our tasks, in His cause, exercising
faith, maintaining hope, constrained by
love. Should we not in our spiritual
building try to combine both beauty and
permanency, thereby honoring Christ
and making attractive to the world the
life lived in Christ and for Him.
MEETING OF OHIO PRESBYTERIAL
Ohio Presbytery and Presbyterial met
in Southfield Reformed Presbyterian
1955. The retiring moderator, Dr. M. K.
inspiring sermon, the address of wel
The Devotional theme of the meetings
was "Christianity and Life." The presi
dent of the Presbyterial, Mrs. J. R. Ste
group separately on the subject "A life
Present at all of our meetings were
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Sanderson, home
both the afternoon and evening meet
ings on Wednesday. The afternoon talks
were given in the form of question and
answer periods, questions being asked
by one and answered by the other. In
the evening each spoke separately and
gave us a very
clear picture of what
our schools are trying to do and what
needs to be done.
YOUR PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear Synodical Friends,
We have just completed our mission
ary year of "seeking God's indispensible
We trust that all have bene
fited in this search and are living closer
to the Lord, so that in this coming year
we, on this foundation may "arise and
build."
For this new year's building, we have
among others the following foundation
stones upon which to build.
We published 500 "Taught of the
Lord"
books by Mrs. Hayes McKelvey at
$691.20 and on April 23 we had sold
266 copies or $274 worth. These books
should be on
used for Daily
the market NOW and
Vacation Bible School.
Has
your society
ordered her share
This is an opportunity to build soundly
upon God's Word.
We have been witnessing for Chris
tian education in donating to the Cyprus
Building Fund. Larnaca's new school
building was dedicated Saturday, April
30, upon which occasion a message from
your Synodical president was read.
On stated occasions there have been
in our Women's Missionary Column in
the Witness reports of our Aged People's
"Home's activities. Although the Home
for the Aged does not come under our
jurisdiction, for it is a separate organi
zation,
yet your president gave this
permission until Official Board Meet
ing, Saturday, June 11, at which time
the Board may condemn or affirm this
action. As we saw it, it saved the ex
pense of mailing reports to our many
members.
The question comes again, "What may
we call Missionary Books
I feel we have done too much quib
bling about the exact type and I favor
the approval of devotional, biography,
or any good missionary novel that sets
forth the cause, the remedy or the re
sults of missionary effort. Missionary
characters in a novel will remain longer
and speak oftener in one's mind than
statistical facts, I feel.
Temperance Superintendents imply
that they do not feel their report blanks
fit a congregation where there is no
W. C. T. U. Nevertheless write your re
port on the back and we shall ask the
Temperance Superintendent to consider
the matter of revision.
Many missionaries who have sailed
to or from our shores testify as to the
According to our new Yearbook, we
have added eight Memorial and thirteen
Life Members to our Synodical Memor
ials, the fund of which was voted at
Grinnell to be used to pay $25 per month
to married missionaries, and $10 a
month to a single missionary to be used
for rent during their furlough year. This
past year the amount paid out was
$1,075, while the intake was only $475.
There were more missionaries than
usual at home on furlough this year.
When one "arises to build" he is
somewhat concerned if the money cal
culated does not materialize. This year
the Church Budget plus the $500 has
been raised but our Women's Synodical
treasury is more than $4,400. less than
last year.
The Official Board will have problems
to meet concerning our continued pro
gram. May we be much in prayer for
those who must make decisions June
