YOUNG PEOPLE'S
SECRETARY
oung People
basis of a number of inspiring services
among the congregations. I have helped
to conduct covenant renewal services in
at least seven different congregations.
For the most part it has been a solemn
and uplifting service.
But did covenant renewal stop with
the service where the covenant was
signed I have not seen the Brief Cove
nant on display in the churches. I have
heard no reference to it in any meetings,
nor have I noticed any different sort of
attention being given
promises that were made.
to the solemn
This is no way to merit the promised
blessings of the Lord. He does not hold
out His promises to covenant makers,
but to "such as keep His
How long has it been since you read
the Covenant in your young people's
meeting Or in your private devotion
Has your pastor read it, or asked the
congregation to read it together
Let us recall our Declaration of Faith
"We believe in the Reformed faith,
emphasizing the sovereignty of Christ,
the Presbyterian form of government,
and the New Testament pattern of wor
ship with its exclusive use of the Psalms
Let us renew our Confession of
Sin---
"We confess that too often our faith
has been weak, our works ineffectual,
our loyalty wavering, and our love too
cold. We confess that, knowing the
right, we have too often done
Let us keep our Covenant Obligations
"We do covenant with God that we
will seek to conform our lives to the
teachings and example of our Lord Je
sus Christ; and that we will endeavor to
forsake all that is sinful and that would
compromise our witness for Him. .
,
.
We do solemnly promise to seek first
the Kingdom of God and His righteous
ness in all the relationships of life .
We said we'd do all these things, and
we meant it when we said it. Are we
now where the Psalmist was when he
sang:
"If we have forgotten the name of our
God
Shall not the Almighty
uncover this sin,
crets within"
In 1953 the Brief Covenant was print
ed on a small four-leaf folder, in several
thousand copies. These have been sent
to all parts of the Church. No more are
in stock. Did you get a copy Have you
read it Do you know where it is now
Is your copy like Grandma's spectacles,
hidden somewhere in a Bible you seldom
use
We are not like to keep that to which
we give little attention. Therefore we
ought to be paying continued attention
to our Covenant of 1954.
I suggest that every C.Y.P.U. avail it
self of copies of the Brief Covenant for
1954, enough for every member, and that
the Covenant be read aloud together at
least once every two months.
If there is sufficient demand for cop
ies of the Covenant from congregations
or societies, I will have a new edition
printed and send them out at cost. But
don't wait for a new printing, if you
have some copies. Keep the Covenant in
your mind, in your heart, and in your
activities.
NOTICE
Not all the Societies have secured the
C.Y.P.U. YEARBOOKS for 1955. Every
home of Covenanter young people should
have at least one copy. Let me hear
from the societies that have not yet or
dered. The cost is only
15c per copy.
A number of societies are using the
new BIBLE STUDIES for their Bible
Study project of the Plan of Work. Two
units are now ready. Unit One has four
studies: (1) The Gospel; (2) Belief;
(3) Repentance; (4) Surrender.
Unit Two has six studies on Christian
Character Development: (1) Personal
Devotion; (2) Obedience; (3) Meeting
Temptation; (4 & 5) Growth in Grace;
(6) Witnessing.
All studies have a minimum of 14
questions (2 for each day for a week)
with answers from Bible passages. The
cost is 2c per copy.
Write about other materials you may
want. Possibly your Young People's Sec
retary can supply
where to get them.
them or tell you
The First Unit of the Bible Study Program is now complete.
It consists of Four Studies
elsewhere.
