THE SECRET
In the Christian Medical Society
Journal, Dr. Vaughn Rees tells of his
experiences in a Chinese Christian com
munity during the early days of Com
munism. The Communists had a public
day nursery for sick children, and dur
ing an epidemic of measles four-fifths
of them died. In the Christian nursery
only two out of sixty-seven died.
This excited the curiosity of the Com
munists, and they called a meeting to
consider the reason for so great a dis
crepancy.
Several hundreds were ga
thered. The Communist doctor, after
asking some routine medical questions,
turned to Pastor Ching (who was later
martyred, Stephenlike, by stoning), and
asked :
"Our great trouble is that we cannot
get nurses to love the children, really
love them. What methods do you use
to this
Imagine the scene! All these young
Communists with pencils poised. I could
almost see the headings of their note
books, "Rules for making nurses love
their Pastor Ching arose and
said, "If they have the Lord Jesus in
their hearts, they must love, for He is
love."
The chairman was visibly vexed, but
he went on, "Do your children swear
Do they fight" and then, "Do your
nurses steal the drugs"
Mr. Ching gave a negative reply, and
the chairman continued, "How then do
you prevent this
To which Mr. Ching answered, "Steal
ing, lying, and fighting
place until Jesus changes
"THE WHITE CARNATIONS"
I have read of a young Christian nurse
in the city
of St. Louis who became
much concerned about her patient's lit
tle daughter, Margaret. The child was
winsome in her ways, but unwilling to
submit to God's claim upon her life. She
thought herself too young to be a Chris
tian, and wanted "a good time" first.
One day, when the invalid mother was
better, a friend sent a bunch of beauti
ful white carnations. "I think," said the
nurse to Margaret, "we will not take
these flowers to your mother just now
they are so fresh and sweet let us keep
them here for a few days, and then take
them to her
So saying, she
fetched a vase and water. At first, Mar
garet looked in silent wonder, then, be
coming angry, "You shall do no such
thing!"
she exclaimed. "The beautiful
flowers must be taken to my darling
immediately!"
mother
Tenderly the
nurse put her arm around the child.
"Yes,"
she said, "I think, too, that
Mother ought to have the flowers when
The children of the Sabbath School
The Mitchels especially want to thank
the congregation for the fine pop-up
toaster. When we think of the good
things that came our way during the
year: apples, eggs, chickens, fish, tur
key, money to purchase paint for two
parsonage rooms, and other tokens of
thoughtfulness, we truly
want to ex
press our appreciation to the Lake Reno-
grace to work and worship together ac
ceptably in His sight during 1955.
Miss Edna Elsey, Detroit, Michigan,
and Mr. and Mrs. Paul McCrory, Deni
son, Kansas, have been welcome guests
at services recently. On other Sabbaths
the following were present: the Ernest
Ewing family, and Mr. Jack Ewing and
daughter, all of Minneapolis. Jean Mit
chel of Geneva College spent the holi
days at home, and on her return trip
stopped for a few hours in Chicago to
visit Marjorie Mitchell.
The young people had another enjoy
able party together, December 30, under
the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Peterman. They went bowling, then re
turned to the parsonage for games,
stunts, and plenty to eat.
Mr. John Kipp, student at M.I.T. gave
"Prayer Meeting is the shot in the
arm, the stimulant, the mid-week boost
that gives us the needed strength to go
through the week without slipping spir
