COLLEGE HILL
The Christmas entertainment, under
the leadership of Mrs. Stewart Lee,
Superintendent and her assistants was
a pleasant and profitable affair. The
younger classes repeated Bible verses
and gave recitations and the Intermediate
Class, Miss Aphrodite Thrombattas, the
teacher, gave a playlet entitled "While
the Shepherds Watched." The Primary
Class, Mrs. Alice Sterrett, teacher, pre
sented an interesting exercise, "The
Best Gift." All sang carols. Six members
of the School had a perfect attendance
during the year.
Two interesting features on the pro
gram were the presentation of a lamp
to Mrs. Stewart Lee for her very efficient
leadership as Superintendent of the
Sabbath School and Leader of our choir,
and a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant on
a $50.00 bill from the congregation to our
Pastor, Dr. F. H. Lathom.
The White Gift which is taken at this
time amounted to $137.62 and was ap
portioned to The Salvation Army, Am
erican Bible Society, American Sabbath
School Union, Church World Service,
the W.C.T.U., Christian Amendment
Movement and the Welfare Fund.
the work in Cyprus, showing interesting
pictures.
AN APPRECIATION
We wish to bear testimony to the
sterling Christian character of Dr. Paul
Coleman and to his leadership as a
pastor. When we were considering mak
ing out a call for him, no objections
were raised other than one member
remarking, "Do you think his physical
strength will be equal to it" We are
very grateful that God not only gave
him the strength to stand it for over
30 years, but also to give us a leader
ship that no one but a consecrated fol
lower of Jesus Christ could give, and
one that will continue to bear fruit
in the years to come.
Dr. Coleman is a man of strong faith,
a true and zealous interpreter of God's
Word and a firm believer in the effi-
62
cacy of prayer. His interest in the chil
dren and young people was manifested in
the vitality and zest he put forth in
their mental, physical and social as well
as their spiritual lives. He was always
willing to lend a helping hand.
Dr. Coleman was a welcome visitor in
our homes and a friend in need or
joy.
His quarterly letters to our out of town
members, showing
an interest in them
and informing them of our congregation
al work, brought many responses, sev
eral stating that they would have been
lost to our denomination had it not
been for them.
Our prayer is that God will give him
physical relief and enable him to still
take a part in our Denominational work
for which he is so eminently fitted.
Kansas City Session.
MORNING SUN, IA.
After the January W.M.S. meeting with
Mrs. Robert Dickson, Mrs. J. E. McElroy
was pleasantly surprised with a New
Year's Gift pound party.
James Dunn and family
and presented the Morning
have made
Sun church
with an outdoor bulletin board in mem
ory of his mother Mrs. Knox (Tillie
Dodds) Dunn. She will be remembered
as the hostess to all the visiting minis
ters as long as services were held at
Wyman,
and when Wyman congregation
was disorganized she brought her family
to the Morning Sun congregation where
she was a
faithful member of church
services and the Women's Missionary
society, serving as hostess to misionary
meetings and contributing generously to
all missions. When her death occured a
few years ago, she had a large sum
waiting to be used in her W.M.S. Thank
Offering envelope.
To carry on the Dodds and Dunn
reputation for leadership
in religious
work, at the Older Boys and Girls con
ference held in Morning Sun two of
Knox Dunn's grandchildren were elected
to offices. Virginia Dunn, son of William
Dunn as Vice-President, and Jimmy
Dunn, son of James Dunn, elected as
Secretary-Treasurer. Rev. McElroy con
ducted one of the discussion groups at
this conference. There was a good atten
dance in spite of the blizzard which also
came that day.
Members of the CYPU each asked a
guest to supper social held at the Clyde
MeElhinney country home. About 20 at
tended with Rev. and Mrs. McElroy as
sponsors.
Our sympathy goes to Mrs. Patter
son's brother Robert Dickson,
who is our
faithful janitor, and to her husband
Rev. H. G. Patterson who was our pastor
for thirty-five years.
For many years
before her marriage she was loved just
because she was lovely as her name indi
cates, and then as pastor's wife she filled
it graciously, as WMS President, and
Presbyterial President and taught our
children in the Sabbath School, as well
as serving as Junior S. S. Sup't. many
years. She also was leader of the Junior
Society several years, and was especial
ly proficient in the use of the flannel
graph. She continued in this service
even after her husband retired as pastor.
Word has come that Rev. Patterson's
of southern Illinois died
sister Mary
after a brief illness, she had been visit
ing at Cameron Patterson's in Florida at
the same time her brother was there.
Morning
Sun annual church dinner
was held at the library, with the usual
delicious meal, followed by a program,
One game which everyone enjoyed was
"Are you
prepared by Mrs.
Robert Dickson. Questions were asked
like these
the picture on the church
bulletin of last Sabbath, the number of
pews, the number of lights in the church.
Make up your own list, and try it at
your socials.
Music was furnished by
Winnifred Wilson on the accordion
Gwen Wilson on the piano, and Jimmy
McElroy on the tonette accompanied by
Gwen Wilson. Latha McElhinney gave
a
humorous reading.
Mrs. Frances Pogemiller.
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Cummings have
gone to Orlando Florida for the winter.
She will be missed as one of the S. S.
teachers.
Mrs. Mary Hetherington who suffered
a broken leg is in the Burlington hospi
tal. While there she found what good
nurses were her granddaughters Martha
Stodgell, and Elizabeth Brenner who are
daughters of the late Mrs. Lee (Ellen
Hetherington) Stodgell.
Mrs. Anna Wilson is ill at her son
of her nephew Dale Wilson. Her present
