Himself to the utter confusion and refutation of the
critics.
The New Testament also suffers at the hands of
the Barthian revamper. The temptation of Jesus
Christ comes out as a subjective experience: "When
thoughts came to him in the desert of bringing sal
vation to his people by any of the ways they were
expecting, he knew it was Satan and not God who
was putting the ideas before him" (p. 111). Jesus
is set against Moses and the Old Testament:
"Against what was written in our sacred books in
olden times Jesus sets his own word: 'But I say
unto "They found no fault with this attitude
of Jesus. They felt in him a deep self-assurance that
had no hint of arrogance. They knew he was helping
them to understand better what God's will had really
been from the beginning" (p. 115).
For the rest, by insinuation, intimidation and
innuendo the Bible record is distorted, dishonored,
and destroyed. John is represented as disillusioning
the people waiting for Christ's return: "To the
people waiting for Jesus' return, John's gospel said :
'He does not need to return to be with us. He has
come to us through the Spirit of God whom he has
us.'"
MAKING $9 GO FARTHER THAN $10
The late Henry Clay Trumbull, founder of The
Sunday School Times, once said: "If a Christian
man has an income large enough to supply all his
needs without difficulty, there is neither shadow of
excuse nor show of decency in his failure to pay
one-tenth of it to the Lord. But when one feels the
pinch of poverty every day of his life, then it is im
portant that he should bear in mind that 9 cents
will go farther than 10 cents would go, and that
$9.00 will go farther than $10.00 would go, in pro
viding for himself and his loved ones, when that
other cent or that other dollar has been paid to the
Lord, who claims it as His own.
"There is no mistake about this to him who has
faith. Every child of God who has rested on this
truth has found it to be a source of unfailing de
pendence. Only those disbelieve it who have never
trusted God enough to try it even as an experiment.
It is with individuals as it is with churches in this
matter. Neither their troubles nor their doubts ever
come from their giving too freely of their substance
to the Lord."
Institute.
Not long before His last week before
He was crucified, Jesus and His disciples
were at Jericho. One day Jesus was
walking along the road with His disci
ples and a great crowd followed Him. A
blind man named Bartimaeus sat by the
side of the road. He held a little cup or
container and people would drop in a
few pennies as they passed by. With this
money he would get a little food to eat.
It was a lonely time that he had but he
would listen to people talking as they
went by. One day he heard about Some-
90
one who was able to open the eyes of a
blind man. Bartimaeus perked up his
ears and listened for any more news of
this Healer. How excited he was when
he heard that the reason for such a
crowd was that this Healer was passing
by. So Bartimaeus called out, "Jesus,
thou Son of David, have mercy on
People tried to quiet him and to tell him
that Jesus didn't want anything to do
with such a poor man as he. But he
would not be comforted. What joy was
his when someone said, "Jesus has sent
for Quickly he dropped his beg
gar's garment and came to Jesus. Jesus
said, "How do you want me to have
mercy
on you What is it that you
The blind man said, "Lord, that
I might receive my
And Jesus re
We have called this story "A Lesson
in Prayer." Jesus was teaching Barti
maeus and us to be definite in our
prayers. Jesus knows what we have need
of before we ask Him, but He wants us
to recognize our needs. Let us stop to
think a little about our prayers. We
pray for our missionaries. We say,
"Bless all the foreign and home mission
How can we make this prayer
mean more to us We can find out from
our missionaries about some boy or girl
who needs something particular. Per
haps this child loves the Lord but his
father doesn't. We need to pray for
this child (by name) and ask God to
make his father accept Christ. Ask your
missionary to let you know when your
prayer is answered. I am reminded of a
little boy's prayer a grandnephew, I
think, of Dr. Ida Scudder. "Aunt Ida"
wanted one million dollars to build a
hospital in India. The little fellow heard
about this and that evening in his
prayers he prayed, "O God, please give
Aunt Ida one million dollars for her
hospital and bless my sick
He knew what he wanted and was defi
nite in his requests.
Do we pray, "Bless Daddy and Mother
and sister and brother and But
me"
how do we want God to bless them
Think of definite ways in which you
want the Lord to bless them.
Do we pray, "Forgive us all our
It's good to use that word "all" so that
none of our sins is left out, but it's also
good for us to examine our hearts
through the day and ask God to forgive
us for the time we talked back to Dad
dy, or to forgive us for forgetting to
make our bed that Mother asked us to
make in the morning. Let us be more
definite in our prayers. If possible keep
