SHARON NEWS
Mrs. Etta Jane McClure, 83, a member
of the Sharon congregation, died at her
home very suddenly, on January 10. She
had been at church as usual the day be
fore. In her youth she united with the
Linn Grove congregation, and at the
time of its dissolution placed her mem
bership in Sharon. She was the mother
of a large family. Her husband passed
away in 1938. "Her children rise up and
call her blessed."
The annual congregational dinner of
the Sharon congregation was held on
December 31. Following the dinner the
children presented a program of Christ
mas songs and recitations,
given a treat.
and were
Rev. and Mrs. John Edgar, and Louise,
spent a week in Greeley at Christmas
time, visiting Mr. Edgar's parents. In
the absence of the pastor on December
26, the services were conducted by Li
centiate Donald McClurkin.
Mrs. Mary Emma Johnston, a member
of the Santa Ana congregation, came to
Sharon to attend the funeral of her
mother, Mrs. Jennie McClure, and
visited in the community for about ten
days. Also in attendance at the funeral
were three other daughters, Miss Hyma
McClure and Mrs. Margaret Dwyer of
Omaha, and Mrs. Mildred Mahaffey of
Des Moines.
TOPEKA
WILKINSBURG
Recently, the Juniors have had two
treats. The first was a visit to Buhl
Planetarium. Here, the attention of the
Juniors and their parents was captured
by modern scientific demonstrations and
by the breath-taking "Sky Show," the
latter woven skilfully into the story of
the Star of Bethlehem. The Juniors had
their second treat when they were enter
tained at dinner and a party in the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Merl Hodgkiss.
The annual Sabbath School entertain
ment was in charge of Mrs. Robert Mc
Knight. A clever program of songs,
readings, and skits, followed by a social
hour, provided a pleasant evening for all
who could attend.
We are enjoying the fellowship of the
Sandersons of Latakia. They are in
Pittsburgh for several months, taking
courses in both Pittsburgh-Xenia and
our Seminary.
Kenneth and Marjorie
are at home among us, whether partici
pating in the work, the social life, or the
worship of the congregation.
On January 28 our young people
joined CYPU groups from neighboring
congregations in Pittsburgh and Beaver
Falls, the Geneva College CYPO, and
the Seminary students in an ice-skating
party at "The Gardens" arena in Pitts
burgh. Later in the evening all came to
the Seminary, where they
enjoyed re
freshments served by the students.
Several members and friends of the
congregation, along with students from
the Seminary, responded to an S.O.S.
call for help to prepare Christian
Amendment literature for mailing. Be
fore these items are published, another
"work bee" will have been held for the
addressing
of CAM envelopes.
The Blue Banner Club ushered in the
month of February by enjoying a boun
tiful dinner in the church dining-room.
After dinner, Dr. McKnight led us in a
devotional period. At the business meet
ing which followed, Miss Rhoda Beatty
was chosen president of the group to
succeed Mr. Ray Stohner. During con
secutive terms, Mr. and Mrs. Stohner
have given faithful service in that capac
ity. The games were in charge of Mrs. T.
MORNING SUN, IA.
Mrs. Howard Hensleigh was hostess
to Women's Missionary Society in
place of Mrs. Armstrong who is caring
for her grandchildren while their moth
er Mrs. Mary Ann Johnson is in Monti
cello hospital. Mrs. Johnson is spending
a few days at her mother's, recuperat
ing.
Mrs. Emma (Milligan) Schofield has
been confined to her home for a few
weeks, but is gaining strength.
Noise and confusion reigns at the par
sonage, as new floors are laid, a door
in here and a wall removed there, and a
bathroom installed upstairs.
E. Raymond Wilson, Washington, D.
C, visited his mother and worshiped
with us in January when he responded
to Rev. McElroy's invitation to bring
the message of the morning. Raymond is
a lobbyist for the Friends Committee
on National Legislation. His messages
are always interesting as He deals with
issues that have not yet appeared in the
newspapers. On Feb. 2, he testified be
fore the House Armed Services Com
mittee in opposition to the enactment of
HR3005 providing for a four year ex
tension of the peacetime draft. The bill
together with HR2967 would provide for
military control over the life of every
young man for a period of from 8 to 10
years if the military wish to exercise
that option
a system of military com
pulsion alien to the American tradition
and contrary to the American dream.
Mrs.
Cora Kimble has returned to
Morning Sun and is at the home of her
brother John Kilpatrick.
Rev. H. G. Patterson, D.D. is spending
several weeks at his son's Dr. H. M.
Patterson, D.O., Mediapolis,
recuperat
surgical patient at
Burlington, Iowa.
