One of these boys referred to as having a
spiritual
awakening wrote after being in college a
few weeks, that it seems there was no religion in
the college he went to after leaving us, saying that,
one was free to do most anything, and he came in
contact with several that lived a rather fast life.
Then he went on to say ". . . but I am trying to live
up to the standards and religious truths that I have
been taught in my former days." Let us hope that
we were partly responsible to make these standards
and truths fundamental in his life and that of many
other young people in our midst.
Old Bible Manuscript
A manuscript of the New Testament in Aramaic, said
to be 1600 years old, supposed to be the oldest known copy
of the N.T., has been placed on special display in the Li
brary
of Congress. This is the first public exhibit of the
manuscript since it was brought to America in 1930. The
owner is Norman Yonan and the Aramaic Bible Founda
tion is seeking a fund of $1,500,000 to purchase it and do
nate it to the Library of Congress. Mr. Yonan emigrated to
the U. S. from Iraq after World War I. He says that the
manuscript has been in his family for nearly 50 generations.
Comments by the Rev. Bruce C. Stewart
Here is a word of many meanings
"serve"! We "serve" guests at a party;
we "serve" customers in a store; we
"serve" a summons upon someone; we
"serve" a tennis ball; we let oleo "serve"
as butter; we "serve" a hitch in the
Marines; we "serve" the public in offi
cial capacity; we "serve" our master;
and we "serve" the Lord. You probably
can think of other uses of this word; it
is a big word in scope and usage.
However, we are interested in this
topic to consider the word "serve" as it
applies to our relationship with Christ.
My Webster's Abridged Dictionary gives
18 definitions to this verb, but the first
one is "to exert oneself continuously or
statedly for; specifically, in a religious
sense, to obey or True worship."
service,
no matter what its varied applications,
is based upon service to God.
There are three "c's" we might think
of in connection with out service:
CLEANSING
Just as we must get right with God
before we can grow spiritually, so we
must have our hearts cleansed before we
can serve God acceptably. Gideon had to
June 1, 1955
clean out the idolatry of his own village
before he could serve God as the one
who would bring victory over the idola
trous Midianites. When Isaiah had his
vision of God, he realized that his own
life had to be cleansed before he could
serve God. It is only as we experience
the cleansing power of the blood of
Christ that we are able to serve Him.
CALL,
When our hearts have been cleansed,
then we wili hear the Call of God. When
Isaiah's heart was cleansed, then He
heard the voice of the Lord, saying,
"Whom shall I send, and who will go for
Isaiah said, "Here am I; send me!"
Today
we need ministers in our
church; there are vacant congregations;
there are many communities where
churches might be started, and the Call
of the Lord comes, "Whom shall I send,
and who will go for
Today
we need missionaries both
on the foreign field and in our congre
gations; people who will witness for
Christ; soulwinners, and the call of the
Lord comes, "Whom shall I send, and
who will go for
COMMISSION
When God calls us, He has a specific
work for us to do! Jesus Christ came
to this earth for a specific purpose
save sinners! That was His work! As
we read in Matt. 20:28, "He came not to
be ministered unto, but to
(not to be served, but to serve). Just as
Christ served us, so we have the com
mission to serve our fellow men; and in
so doing we are serving Him.
to
In our Covenant of 1954 we promised
to avail ourselves of opportunities
public and private .... FOR CHRIS
TIAN SERVICE." Then the Covenant
goes on to point out those things which
help us to "serve."
For discussion:
1. Consider each of the seven things
in the Covenant of 1954 which help us
to "serve." In what way does each one
help us
a. worship
b. prayer
c. study of the Scriptures
d. keeping holy the Sabbath Day
e. observing the appointed sacraments
f. giving regularly to the Lord's work
g. seeking to win others to Christ
2. What is the difference between the
service of the believer and the unbeliev
er
it
22
3. Are we serving if we are paid for
4. What is "eye
See Col. 3:
5. What is the relationship between
"serve" and "grow"
God tells Moses that the children of
He wishes to dwell among them. He had
be His royal palace; in it He would
keep His court. While in the wilderness
the people lived in tents, so too, was the
