THE IMPROVEMENT IN CHEMICAL CONTROL OF
SUGARCANE STEM BORES

This paper presents the results of study on improvement in using insecticides
for controlling sugarcane stem borers. The experiment was conducted by Institute of
sugarcane Research at Ben Cat (Binh Duong) during 2001-2002.
The experiment consisted of 5 treatments: (1) Cutting and removal of infested
plants; (2) Selective applying insecticides to only the infested location within
sugarcane fields; (3) Applying insecticides to whole sugarcane fields (non-selective
applying insecticides); (4) Cutting infested plants in combination with selective
applying insecticides; and (5) Check (no control measures). The experimental design
was RCB in this test, with 3 replications for 3 sugarcane varieties. Area of each
treatment plot was 2 ha.
The obtained results showed that cutting infested plants in combination with
selective applying insecticides (treatment 4) gave very good control of sugarcane stem
borers. This treatment gave more benefit than other treatment. The treatment 3 has
expenditure exceeded the income.
